Smoking in United States of America

In the United States of America, smoking is allowed but tobacco products should follow some regulations. Under these regulations, health warnings on tobacco packaging including cigarettes are mandatory, the minimum legal age for their sales is 21 years, and there are no federal legal restrictions on smoking in public places. While tobacco advertising is regulated, not all forms of their advertising are banned. An excise tax of 32.16% with a total taxation rate of 37.36% is applied on cigarettes. Cigarettes can legally be sold with authorised documents. They may also be purchased through vending machines as well as through online channels. Importing cigarettes for trade is allowed with an appropriate import license. Despite these control measures, prevalence data show that smoking remains an important public health issue in the United States. There were 39.8 million current smokers in the country in 2024. This represents an overall adult smoking prevalence of 14.1%, with higher prevalence among men (17.1%) than among women (11.1%). In comparison, the overall current smoking prevalence was 12.3% in 2022. The adult daily smoking prevalence was recorded to be 10.01% in 2020. Smoking-related mortality also remains significant in the country. In 2021, smoking resulted in 360,370 deaths, including 216,986 male deaths and 143,383 female deaths. This shows that smoking accounted for 10.38% of all deaths in the United States in 2021, with a higher rate among men (11.9%) than among women (8.7%).

Teenagers who use e-cigarettes more likely to start smoking, study finds

Teens who use electronic cigarettes are more likely to start smoking regular cigarettes – and they are likely to use both products more often over time, a new study found.

The Rand Corporation study looked at more than 2,000 youths in California, starting when they were teenagers and continuing until they were young adults. “Not only are adolescents who start vaping more likely to start smoking in the future, but they’re also likely to go on and use e-cigarettes and cigarettes more frequently,” said Michael Dunbar, [...]

Dick Durbin Argues That E-Cigarettes Will Cause an Increase in Smoking

In a recent letter to the Chicago Sun-Times, Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) takes issue with my argumentthat new FDA restrictions on e-cigarettes could deter smokers from switching to vaping, resulting in more tobacco-related deaths than would otherwise occur. "Mr. Sullum needs to check his facts," Durbin says, claiming that e-cigarettes, on balance, lead to more rather than less smoking. That conclusion is based on some highly implausible assumptions.

Fentanyl and synthetic cannabinoid confirmed in latest Philadelphia overdose spike

The same drug combination behind July's outbreak of overdoses — fentanyl and a synthetic cannabinoid, commonly known as "K2" — was found in a sample of the drug that health officials suspected caused another overdose spike over the weekend.

Health officials said the combination turned up in a sample collected from Hahnemann University Hospital on Friday — at the beginning of a surge that would eventually sicken at least 110 people and kill 7 around the city.

Big Tobacco is marketing vapes to our kids, so our city took them on and won — it’s the FDA’s turn now

The FDA recently announced that it considers a new surge in teen e-cigarette use to be an epidemic, and will give e-cigarette manufacturers 60 days to prove that they are not marketing to kids. This is a very welcome move for those of us who have been pushing to prevent teen tobacco use. Our city recently took on the makers of e-cigarettes and won. The FDA should take San Francisco's lead and do everything it can to protect kids from Big Tobacco.

RESEARCH & COMMENTARY: NEW JERSEY SHOULD ELIMINATE ITS DRACONIAN VAPING TAX

In July 2018, New Jersey approved a measure imposing a tax on “liquid nicotine at a rate of $0.10 per fluid milliliter.” The measure included a one-time floor tax on current inventory of liquid nicotine that is due by October 1, 2018.

In September, Assemblyman John Burzichelli (D-Gloucester) introduced legislation that would replace the e-liquid tax with a “3.5 percent tax on the sale of all products containing nicotine” and repeal the floor tax. If enacted, Burzichelli’s proposal would promote public health [...]

Chicago could double taxes on vape-ware, require e-cigs be kept behind counter

Chicago will be on the leading edge of efforts to reduce e-cigarette usage if a mayoral proposal to toughen the city’s laws passes.

A City Council committee will consider a proposal Thursday that would roughly double the tax on e-cigarettes and require the devices and related products be sold from behind store counters.

The policy, introduced by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, is designed to reduce the use of e-cigarettes among young people.

Your teen is underestimating the health risks of vaping

Teens today are more reluctant to smoke cigarettes than their counterparts nearly three decades ago, according to a study released this summer. But parents should hold their collective sigh of relief. The study, carried out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), uncovered a new, troublesome trend: vaping. "We don't want youth to use devices and become addicted. That's my concern. The addiction to nicotine and conversion to cigarettes," says Roy S. Herbst, [...]

Modern Take on Hashish Is Becoming the Most Popular Way to Consume Legal Cannabis

Hashish, a marijuana product that’s gotten people stoned for centuries, has spawned a new generation of cannabis concentrates that are in such high demand they’re poised to become the most popular way for Americans to consume legal pot.

Dried marijuana flower buds account for the majority of sales in states where pot is legal, but concentrates are gaining ground fast, largely because of new vaping products, according to a report published Tuesday by industry consultants Arcview Market Research and BDS Analytics.

Will Altria Sell Marijuana and Forget About E-Cigarettes?

Shares of Altria (NYSE:MO) jumped nearly 7% on Sept. 12 after executive VP and general counsel Murray Garnick discussed the cannabis market at the Barclays 2018 Consumer Staples Conference. Garnich stated that Altria was "exploring options" and "evaluating market opportunities." That news seemed to offset a negative development regarding Altria's e-cig business. The FDA issued a warning to tobacco companies, stating that it would pull their e-cigarettes from retail shelves if they didn't make more changes to curb teen use. [...]
