Smoking in United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, smoking is allowed but tobacco products are subject to certain regulations. Under these regulations, there is a complete ban on all forms of tobacco advertising. Cigarettes can be purchased online, but not through vending machines. The importation of cigarettes for trade is allowed with an import license. Additionally, health warnings on cigarette packaging are required, and the minimum legal age for purchase is 18 years. Legal restrictions on smoking in public places are also enforced. Cigarettes in the UK are subject to an excise tax of 50.56% and a total taxation rate of 83.72%. Statistics show a gradual decline in the current smoking prevalence in the UK since 2000. There were approximately 6.7 million current adult smokers in the country in 2024, representing an adult current smoking prevalence of 11.8%. This was 13.1% in 2022, and 27.1% in 2000. Smoking prevalence was higher among males with 13.6% than among females with 10.1% in 2024. Daily smoking prevalence among adults was 9.1% overall, 8.1% among females, and 10.2% among males in 2024. In 2021, smoking led to 75,848 deaths in the UK, of which 44,400 deaths were among males and 31,448 deaths were among females. This shows that smoking consisted 11.05% of all deaths in the country, including 12.6% of all male deaths and 9.42% of all female deaths.

Vaping may ‘wake up’ cancer cells and trigger wave of killer disease in a decade, experts warn
WE know that vaping is less harmful than smoking - there’s none of the toxic smoke and tar you get with cigarettes.
However, scientists have now warned that vaping could cause cancer the same way as air pollution can. Professor Charles Swanton, of The Francis Crick Institute and chief clinician of Cancer Research UK, said vaping is "almost certainly" safer than smoking.
However, he added: "I don't think we can say vaping is necessarily a safe option to quit smoking.
"It may be safer but that doesn't mean it's safe."
He went on to say: "We don't know for certain vaping won't cause lung cancer 10 years from now.”

Smoking laws light up the path for a small government
A Johnson government, with its tendency to lean towards state intervention, and a pandemic, which lead to restrictions not seen for decades, has left the UK in an era where the big hand of Whitehall is the norm. [...] The government has committed to a target of being “Smokefree” – where less than 5 per cent of people smoke – by 2030. We have made significant progress, with a dramatic decline in smoking rates, but not from big state intervention. Rates plummeted from just under 21 per cent in 2011 to less than 15 per cent in 2020 after e-cigarette use went mainstream.

One in five 15-year-old girls in England vape
More than one in five 15-year-old girls use electronic cigarettes, new statistics show, with the rise of vaping among that age group reminiscent of smoking levels more than a decade ago.
The research found 21% of 15-year-old girls admitted to currently using e-cigarettes in 2021, more than double the amount recorded by NHS Digital in 2018 (10%). The proportion of girls who vape was seven percentage points higher than boys of the same age.

UK Program Will Pay People to Quit Smoking During Pregnancy
Pregnant people will be offered vouchers worth up to £400 (almost $500) to quit smoking in a pilot scheme in the North West of England. The program hopes to reduce harms and address widening health inequalities.
Smoking is the leading cause of cancer, preventable illness and premature mortality in England, with almost 80,000 annual smoking-related deaths. Smoking during pregnancy is associated with a range of harms to parent and child. In 2019, the UK government set an objective for England to be ”smoke-free” by 2030, meaning a national smoking rate of 5 percent or below. [...]

Disposable E-cigarettes: Small WEEE needs a big solution
Around 7.1% of the UK’s population uses e-cigarettes purchasing a staggering half a billion units per year, three million of which are thrown away each week. E-cigarettes (commonly called ‘vapes’) usually consist of a lithium-ion battery, a tank, and a coil to vaporise the e-liquid, and once disposed are classified as waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) under UK law.
Currently, disposable (single-use) vapes make up at least half of the e-cigarette market. The description ‘disposable’ may suggest the devices are as convenient to discard as they are to buy, however, all small WEEE devices must be sent for separate recycling, [...]

'Vaping revolution': 4.3m Brits now use e-cigarettes - but 350,000 of them have never smoked
A record 4.3 million people are actively vaping in Britain after a fivefold increase in a decade, according to a report.
Some 8.3% of adults in England, Wales and Scotland are now believed to be regular vapers - up from 1.7% (about 800,000 people) 10 years ago. Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), which compiled the report, said a "revolution" had occurred.
E-cigarettes allow people to inhale nicotine rather than smoke.
The NHS says they carry "a small fraction of the risk of cigarettes" because they don't produce tar or carbon monoxide.
