Smoking in United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, smoking is allowed but tobacco products are subject to certain regulations. Under these regulations, there is a complete ban on all forms of tobacco advertising. Cigarettes can be purchased online, but not through vending machines. The importation of cigarettes for trade is allowed with an import license. Additionally, health warnings on cigarette packaging are required, and the minimum legal age for purchase is 18 years. Legal restrictions on smoking in public places are also enforced. Cigarettes in the UK are subject to an excise tax of 50.56% and a total taxation rate of 83.72%. Statistics show a gradual decline in the current smoking prevalence in the UK since 2000. There were approximately 6.7 million current adult smokers in the country in 2024, representing an adult current smoking prevalence of 11.8%. This was 13.1% in 2022, and 27.1% in 2000. Smoking prevalence was higher among males with 13.6% than among females with 10.1% in 2024. Daily smoking prevalence among adults was 9.1% overall, 8.1% among females, and 10.2% among males in 2024. In 2021, smoking led to 75,848 deaths in the UK, of which 44,400 deaths were among males and 31,448 deaths were among females. This shows that smoking consisted 11.05% of all deaths in the country, including 12.6% of all male deaths and 9.42% of all female deaths.

Should disposable vapes be banned?

Walk down the street, and you will probably spot finger-sized colourful plastic tubes discarded on the ground.

Disposable vapes are booming in popularity, especially among those aged 18-34. They are easy to use and cheap.

But campaigners say they are an environmental nightmare with one activist calling for them to be banned.

The vape industry told BBC News that the problem lies with unclear disposal rules and that there needs to be better national schemes for recycling.

NNA’s Response to the Observer’s Negative Editorial on Vaping

On Sunday, the Observer published a very negative editorial which repeated all the tired arguments put forward by ideological anti-vaping activists. It ignored the recent comprehensive review by the Office of Health Improvement and Disparities, instead choosing to amplify cherry-picked science, half-truths and hypothetical risks. It has been criticised by public health community experts in harm reduction for smoking cessation and is a perfect example of the irresponsible journalism that many public health groups have blamed for the poor perception of vaping and other lower-risk products amongst the public.

Coffey’s ‘ultra-libertarian’ health stance risks lives, Tory ex-minister warns

People could die because of Thérèse Coffey’s “ultra-libertarian ideological” reluctance to crack down on smoking and obesity, a Conservative ex-health minister has warned.

The strongly worded criticism of the health secretary came from Dr Dan Poulter, a Tory MP and NHS doctor who served as a health minister in the coalition government from 2012 to 2015.

Poulter claims Coffey’s “hostility to what the extreme right call ‘nanny statism’” is stopping her from taking firm action against the “major killers” of tobacco and bad diet.

HEALTH RISK Thousands of Scots schoolkids feared to be hooked on vapes with more nicotine than two packs of cigarettes

Anti-smoking charity ASH Scotland says schoolkids are risking their health puffing on the £5 disposable e-cigs. Each contains around 600 drags — the equivalent of smoking 45 ciggies.

Pupils as young as six have been caught with the gadgets in classrooms — with use among kids up by nearly 4,000 per cent in four years.

An estimated 13.6million disposable vapes are bought in Scotland annually. ASH Scotland chief executive Sheila Duffy said: “The huge upsurge of children using disposable vapes is alarming as these products are not harmless and are age-restricted for good reason.

Smoking is a leading cause of cancer for poorer Brits, study finds

Roughly 460 people die from cancer in the UK every day and, sadly, many of these deaths are linked to entirely preventable causes, like smoking and heavy drinking. These preventable cancers overwhelmingly afflict the most deprived communities in the country, a new study by Cancer Research UK has found.

Across all income brackets, smoking remains the leading cause of preventable cancer and death with 15 per cent of all cancer cases attributed to nicotine inhalation. However, people with the lowest incomes are more than twice as likely to develop a smoking-related cancer as those with the highest incomes.

Health risks of smoking are typically linked to respiratory illness – but it impacts HPV recovery too

It’s no secret that smoking is harmful for our health.

In fact, pictures illustrating the potential consequences are plastered on every packet of cigarettes, along with messages warning us of risk.

We’ve come a long way since the indoor smoking ban of 2007, and the government has pledged for England to be smokefree (meaning fewer than 5% of the population smoke) by 2030.

Yet, despite a wealth of information about tobacco’s effects on the body, the scale of this damage is still not widely known among the public – including how it messes with our reproductive systems.

Vaping Safer Than Smoking Says UK Government (Again!)

Every year the UK government commissions an independent review of the evidence around the safety of vaping. The review of vaping, now in its eighth reiteration, is already the most solid review of vaping evidence in the world – and this year is the most comprehensive yet. The report reiterated that vaping poses only a small fraction of the risks of smoking. However, that doesn’t mean vaping is risk free.

This year there is particular emphasis on biomarkers of exposure – i.e. markers in the body that show the body has been exposed to certain chemicals or toxins.

York schools e-cigarettes campaign launched

A CAMPAIGN to tackle vaping and smoking among young people in York has been launched as new data shows nearly one in five secondary school pupils in the city have used e-cigarettes.

Free patches, gum and nicotine replacement therapy is being offered those aged 12 to 17 starting in October, during the national stop smoking campaign, Stoptober.

The York Schools Survey, in which the council surveyed more than 4,000 children across 37 schools, showed that 19 per cent of secondary school and sixth form students had used e-cigarettes. Among those in Year 12 – children aged 17-18 – this rises to 44 per cent.

How to Respond Sensibly to an Increase in Youth Vaping

For the past few years, the United States public health community has been amplifying irrational fears among certain sections of the public toward youth vaping. At times, it has reached such fevered levels that one could be forgiven for forgetting that respected public health bodies in the United Kingdom have estimated vapes to be at least 95 percent less harmful than the combustible cigarettes they typically replace.

So it was interesting to see the UK response last month to a recent uptick in youth use of e-cigarettes. [...]
