Smoking in United States of America

In the United States of America, smoking is allowed but tobacco products should follow some regulations. Under these regulations, health warnings on tobacco packaging including cigarettes are mandatory, the minimum legal age for their sales is 21 years, and there are no federal legal restrictions on smoking in public places. While tobacco advertising is regulated, not all forms of their advertising are banned. An excise tax of 32.16% with a total taxation rate of 37.36% is applied on cigarettes. Cigarettes can legally be sold with authorised documents. They may also be purchased through vending machines as well as through online channels. Importing cigarettes for trade is allowed with an appropriate import license. Despite these control measures, prevalence data show that smoking remains an important public health issue in the United States. There were 39.8 million current smokers in the country in 2024. This represents an overall adult smoking prevalence of 14.1%, with higher prevalence among men (17.1%) than among women (11.1%). In comparison, the overall current smoking prevalence was 12.3% in 2022. The adult daily smoking prevalence was recorded to be 10.01% in 2020. Smoking-related mortality also remains significant in the country. In 2021, smoking resulted in 360,370 deaths, including 216,986 male deaths and 143,383 female deaths. This shows that smoking accounted for 10.38% of all deaths in the United States in 2021, with a higher rate among men (11.9%) than among women (8.7%).

Cannabis use up among parents with children in the home

Cannabis use increased among parents who smoke cigarettes, as well as among non-smoking parents, according to a latest study [...] Cannabis use was nearly four times more common among cigarette smokers compared with non-smokers. Dr. Marc Siegel: E-cigarettes pose special danger to teens

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are seen by some – including me – as a safer alternative to tobacco cigarettes. But e-cigarettes pose a special danger to teenagers, both as a gateway to traditional cigarettes and because they contain chemicals that may be linked to cancer. A major health danger from e-cigarettes is as a gateway device to tobacco. A University of Pittsburgh study published in April followed late teens and young adults who had never smoked for a year [...]

Third-hand smoke may be lurking in nonsmoking areas, study finds

Harmful cigarette smoke residue may be lurking in rooms where no one has ever lit up, researchers report.

In a new study, scientists from Drexel University in Philadelphia found that in an empty, nonsmoking classroom, nearly 30 percent of the tiny particles in the air were linked with cigarette smoke -- what is called "third-hand" smoke.

"We didn't expect to see a nonsmoking environment having such a signature of tobacco smoke," said lead researcher Peter DeCarlo, [...]

Little 'quit-smoking' help at U.S. mental health centers

Many mental health and addiction treatment centers in the United States don't help patients quit smoking, a new government study finds.
People with mental illness and/or drug or alcohol addiction are far more likely than others to smoke cigarettes. And they are more likely to die from a smoking-related illness than from a behavioral health condition, according to the report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [...]

FDA warns more companies to stop misleading kids with e-liquids that resemble kid-friendly foods as part of Youth Tobacco Prevention Plan

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today issued four new warning letters to manufacturers and retailers for selling e-liquids used in e-cigarettes with labeling and/or advertising that cause them to resemble kid-friendly food products, such as cereal, soda and pancakes. One of the companies receiving a warning letter was also cited for illegally selling the product to a minor. [...]

Colorado's Health Chief: E-Cigarettes Are A Gateway To Tobacco Addiction

Public health officials put out an unusual warning recently to parents and teachers. Small devices that look like flash drives might actually be e-cigarettes, and the number of  teens smoking them has skyrocketed.

The executive director of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Dr. Larry Wolk, tells Colorado Matters that electronic cigarettes are a gateway to traditional tobacco. Wolk is a pediatrician.

The FDA should let e-cigarettes help adults — but not hook kids

ABOUT A decade ago, the e-cigarette industry began to boom in the United States, largely unregulated. Vaping was much safer than conventional smoking, and the devices helped some longtime smokers to moderate their highly deadly habit, but e-cigarettes also addicted a generation of new nicotine users. Now, finally, the Food and Drug Administration is stepping in more forcefully to encourage the positive effects of e-cigarettes and discourage the drawbacks.

Schumer Calls for FDA Ban on Candy-Flavor E-Cigarettes

Senator Chuck Schumer is asking the Food and Drug Administration to fully regulate vapor products, including a call for a ban of fruit and candy e-cigarette flavors.

"The FDA needs to be the adult in the room and put an end to these cynical marketing ploys," Schumer said at a news conference.  His stance is that these flavors, like "bubble gum" and "gummy bear" are "cynical marketing ploys" aimed to attract minors.

'Abstinence only' is the wrong approach to vaping products

Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) may seem an unlikely member of the abstinence movement. Yet when it comes to smoking at least, he is firmly in favor of pushing the “just say no” line rather than providing information about how to limit the risk of harm.

No one who cares about public health wants any current nonsmoker to start smoking or vaping. Particularly, we don't want teenagers to make decisions that put their health at long-term risk [...]

Another reminder that smoking absolutely destroys your lungs

Puffing on a pack of cigarettes a day will leave your lungs black and riddled with cancer.

Nurse Amanda Eller, from North Carolina, shared the video showing one set of healthy lungs next to the diseased organs from a smoker.

The contrast is shocking.

On one side, a pair of bright red, healthy lungs — taken from someone who has never smoked before.

Next to the prime specimen, a grossly bigger set of lungs, that are black and almost resemble a pile of charcoal.
