Smoking in United States of America

In the United States of America, smoking is allowed but tobacco products should follow some regulations. Under these regulations, health warnings on tobacco packaging including cigarettes are mandatory, the minimum legal age for their sales is 21 years, and there are no federal legal restrictions on smoking in public places. While tobacco advertising is regulated, not all forms of their advertising are banned. An excise tax of 32.16% with a total taxation rate of 37.36% is applied on cigarettes. Cigarettes can legally be sold with authorised documents. They may also be purchased through vending machines as well as through online channels. Importing cigarettes for trade is allowed with an appropriate import license. Despite these control measures, prevalence data show that smoking remains an important public health issue in the United States. There were 39.8 million current smokers in the country in 2024. This represents an overall adult smoking prevalence of 14.1%, with higher prevalence among men (17.1%) than among women (11.1%). In comparison, the overall current smoking prevalence was 12.3% in 2022. The adult daily smoking prevalence was recorded to be 10.01% in 2020. Smoking-related mortality also remains significant in the country. In 2021, smoking resulted in 360,370 deaths, including 216,986 male deaths and 143,383 female deaths. This shows that smoking accounted for 10.38% of all deaths in the United States in 2021, with a higher rate among men (11.9%) than among women (8.7%).

PEOPLE ARE THROWING THEIR JUULS OUT WINDOWS AND DRENCHING THEM IN WATER JUST TO QUIT

Henry Korman is exactly who Juul wants using its e-cigarettes. [...] Korman’s not alone in trying to kick his Juul habit. What started as a way for some people to wean themselves off cigarettes has turned into a new kind of addiction made worse by the ability to vape just about anywhere. [...]

America’s New Nicotine Prohibition

I’m at a lost for words. If you are reading this, you have likely heard the news that President Donald Trump is planning to ban flavored e-cigarettes in the coming weeks.

[...] Acting FDA commissioner offered similar sentiments.

“Nobody wants to see children becoming addicted to nicotine, and we will continue to use the full scope of our regulatory authority thoughtfully and thoroughly to tackle this mounting public health crisis,” Sharpless said.

Of course, no one wants kids using these products. [...]

However, this is ultimately a trivial fact at this point.

Flavoured e-cigs are nothing to fear

The global vaping sector faces a number of regulatory challenges that could drastically change the industry and have serious consequences for public health. In the United States, outgoing Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner Scott Gottlieb has proposed new restrictions on e-cigarettes and vaping. If these proposals become law, retailers across the country could be subject to aggressive restrictions. Some flavoured e-cigarette products will no longer be sold at all, while others will be sold ‘only in a manner that prevents youth access’.

More Americans think e-cigarettes are harmful, study says

More American adults perceive electronic cigarettes to be as harmful as or more harmful than regular cigarettes, according to a new analysis. New York poised to raise purchase age for tobacco products, e-cigarettes to 21

The state Assembly voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to ban the purchase of tobacco products and electronic cigarettes to people under the age of 21, a move expected to be followed in the coming weeks by the state Senate.

Smoking “is a great cost to individuals and families … As a former smoker, I know that," said Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal, a Manhattan Democrat and sponsor of the bill in the Assembly. The bill takes effect 120 days after Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, already on record supporting the higher tobacco purchase age, signs it into law.

E-cigarettes are much safer than smoking but few know it. That's a public health tragedy.

Public health officials’ goal should always be to build awareness of the risks associated with smoking and educate the public on the products that can help smokers quit. Yet the public health community has failed to build awareness of how switching to e-cigarettes can reduce the harm associated with smoking by as much as 95 percent, according to the Public Health England and multiple independent reviews.

This is a public health tragedy. Currently 38 million Americans are addicted to traditional combustible cigarettes, [...]

Tobacco sales could be phased out at New York pharmacies

The growing momentum to keep tobacco products out of pharmacies could result in a statewide ban.

Legislation is scheduled to begin making its way through the Capitol this week that would prohibit the sale of tobacco products in pharmacies, and retailers that operate pharmacies. Municipalities, including New York City and Albany County, have already imposed their own bans, and tobacco products were voluntarily removed from CVS pharmacies in 2014.
