Smoking in United States of America
In the United States of America, smoking is allowed but tobacco products should follow some regulations. Under these regulations, health warnings on tobacco packaging including cigarettes are mandatory, the minimum legal age for their sales is 21 years, and there are no federal legal restrictions on smoking in public places. While tobacco advertising is regulated, not all forms of their advertising are banned. An excise tax of 32.16% with a total taxation rate of 37.36% is applied on cigarettes. Cigarettes can legally be sold with authorised documents. They may also be purchased through vending machines as well as through online channels. Importing cigarettes for trade is allowed with an appropriate import license. Despite these control measures, prevalence data show that smoking remains an important public health issue in the United States. There were 39.8 million current smokers in the country in 2024. This represents an overall adult smoking prevalence of 14.1%, with higher prevalence among men (17.1%) than among women (11.1%). In comparison, the overall current smoking prevalence was 12.3% in 2022. The adult daily smoking prevalence was recorded to be 10.01% in 2020. Smoking-related mortality also remains significant in the country. In 2021, smoking resulted in 360,370 deaths, including 216,986 male deaths and 143,383 female deaths. This shows that smoking accounted for 10.38% of all deaths in the United States in 2021, with a higher rate among men (11.9%) than among women (8.7%).

As I traveled to Washington, D.C. for the Global Tobacco and Nicotine Forum, my mind was unsettled. This is what happened, who I spoke to, and where my mind was in the days leading up to my arrival in D.C.

Banning Menthol Cigarettes Criminalizes Black Communities, Say Advocates
Smoking might be out of vogue, but flavored cigarette bans—like those of flavored vapes—are trending. Several cities in the United States, most recently San Francisco, have prohibited or restricted the sale of menthol cigarettes. [...] Major Franklin said banning the sale of menthols will not protect youth. “With a ban you will put more cigarettes into the hands of young people,” he said, explaining that the regulated market, which restricts sales and requires ID for purchase, protects youth more than the underground market—through which anyone can buy cigarettes on a street corner. Juul Labs Inc. pursued a strategy to win over Washington. But the e-cigarette maker wound up further alienating regulators, helping to thrust the once-soaring startup into a crisis that threatens its business. Facing scrutiny stemming from surging teen use of its vaporizers, Juul has tried over the past year to position itself as a responsible actor in an industry with few rules. Yes: FDA should regulate e-cigarettes to limit access to youths
[...] What ties together the patients who died in Tulare County and Los Angeles County is not that they both vaped "electronic cigarettes," but that they both used illicit THC (marijuana) vaping cartridges that they purchased illegally off the black market. In the two other deaths in which authorities released information about the products used (one in Oregon, one in Minnesota), each involved vaping marijuana, not electronic cigarettes.
