Demand for traditional cigarettes remains down slightly in the face of higher prices from the top tobacco manufacturers, according to the latest Nielsen convenience store report released last week.
Smoking in United States of America
In the United States of America, smoking is allowed but tobacco products should follow some regulations. Under these regulations, health warnings on tobacco packaging including cigarettes are mandatory, the minimum legal age for their sales is 21 years, and there are no federal legal restrictions on smoking in public places. While tobacco advertising is regulated, not all forms of their advertising are banned. An excise tax of 32.16% with a total taxation rate of 37.36% is applied on cigarettes. Cigarettes can legally be sold with authorised documents. They may also be purchased through vending machines as well as through online channels. Importing cigarettes for trade is allowed with an appropriate import license. Despite these control measures, prevalence data show that smoking remains an important public health issue in the United States. There were 39.8 million current smokers in the country in 2024. This represents an overall adult smoking prevalence of 14.1%, with higher prevalence among men (17.1%) than among women (11.1%). In comparison, the overall current smoking prevalence was 12.3% in 2022. The adult daily smoking prevalence was recorded to be 10.01% in 2020. Smoking-related mortality also remains significant in the country. In 2021, smoking resulted in 360,370 deaths, including 216,986 male deaths and 143,383 female deaths. This shows that smoking accounted for 10.38% of all deaths in the United States in 2021, with a higher rate among men (11.9%) than among women (8.7%).

Association between e-cigarette use initiated after cigarette smoking and smoking abstinence: a cross-sectional study among adolescent established smokers in the USA
Recent years have seen a rapid increase in the popularity of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) among adolescents in the USA. Evidence on their role in the continuation of or abstinence from cigarette smoking among young smokers remains scarce. The data were drawn from the 2015–2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey—a nationally representative survey of US middle and high school students. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the association between ever e-cigarette use and past 30-day abstinence from cigarette smoking. [...]

Health risks of vaping cannabis
E-cigarettes commonly known as vapes and e-hookahs, work by creating aerosols that are inhaled into the lungs through the process of heating up the contained liquid. This liquid usually consists of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), nicotine, cannabinoid (CBD) oils, additives, and flavourings.
Researchers examined the health risks of cannabis vaping by conducting a study with 2553 young adults from Southern California. They looked at different frequencies of exposure to cannabis use in order to determine whether or not any health risks were involved.

Dependence on nicotine in US high school students in the context of changing patterns of tobacco product use
There have been substantial recent changes in youth tobacco product use in the USA – including, notably, a rapid increase in use of e‐cigarettes. It is not known whether, and if so how far, these changes are reflected in levels of nicotine dependence. This study used data from a large, nationally‐representative sample of US adolescents to (i) estimate the annual prevalence of nicotine dependence in relation to current use of tobacco products, (ii) describe trends in dependence over time, [...]

Tobacco Harm Reduction’s Prospects Under the Biden Administration
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will assume the offices of president and vice president at a time of great societal division as the pandemic continues to ravage the United States.
It is unsurprising, therefore, that tobacco harms have been largely overlooked amid the unfolding political drama. Yet almost half a million Americans—more even than have so far died of COVID-19—lose their lives to smoking-related causes every single year.

Trends in Electronic Cigarette Use and Conventional Smoking: Quantifying a Possible “Diversion” Effect among U.S. Adolescents
The impact of electronic cigarettes (ECs) on nicotine use is hotly debated: some fear that ECs are a “catalyst” to conventional smoking, while others argue they divert adolescents from the more harmful product. This study used simulation modeling to evaluate the plausibility of catalyst and diversion hypotheses against real‐world data.

Smoking traditional cigarettes along with e-cigarettes causes harmful health effects
Smoking traditional cigarettes in addition to using e-cigarettes results in harmful health effects similar to smoking cigarettes exclusively, according to new research published today [...] In a large data analysis of more than 7,100 U.S. adults ages 18 and older, researchers studied the association of cigarette smoking and e-cigarette use with inflammation and oxidative stress as biomarkers. Inflammation and oxidative stress are key contributors to smoking-induced cardiovascular disease and their biomarkers have been shown to be predictors of cardiovascular events, including heart attack and heart failure.

‘Casual’ smokers may also have nicotine addiction
Even if you consider yourself a light or "casual" smoker, it does not necessarily mean that you have completely escaped nicotine addiction, warns new research.
Many light smokers – those who smoke one to four cigarettes per day or fewer – meet the criteria for nicotine addiction and should, therefore, be considered for treatment, said the study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
"In the past, some considered that only patients who smoke around 10 cigarettes per day or more were addicted, and I still hear that sometimes," said Jonathan Foulds, Professor at Pennsylvania State University in the US.

Experts Comment on Study Analysing Effects of Smoking and Vaping in Pregnancy
Titled, “The effects of prenatal cigarette and e-cigarette exposure on infant neurobehaviour: A comparison to a control group,” the study explored how prenatal e-cigarette exposure compares to prenatal cigarette exposure, in terms of birth outcomes, neurological development and subsequent behavioural abnormalities.
The researchers followed eighty-three infants, who were either exposed prenatally to cigarettes or e-cigarettes, or not exposed to either. The differences amongst these groups were assessed by observing measurable birth outcomes and scores on the Neonatal Behavioural Assessment Scale (NBAS) at one month of age.
