Ready to quit vaping in the new year? Study uncovers the best ways
A study focused on helping people quit vaping suggests that varenicline and text message-based interventions are effective. Cochrane reviews indicate a preference for e-cigarettes over traditional nicotine replacement therapies. Programs using text messages seem beneficial for young people, while varenicline shows potential for adults. However, more research is needed due to limited studies. The study emphasizes the importance of finding safe ways to quit vaping, especially for those who are transitioning from smoking. Doctor issues urgent 'you've been lied to' warning to anyone who vapes
Community members enjoy exclusive offers and ads, while a doctor warns vapers about high nicotine levels in pods. Dr. Karan Rajan cautions that vaping may not aid in quitting smoking as commonly believed, with each pod potentially equaling a pack of cigarettes in nicotine content. He also highlights the allure of flavors that may attract young non-smokers. Vaping's quit-smoking success rate is low, and UK plans are in place to ban disposable vapes soon. While vaping is advised for adult smokers trying to quit, it is harmful for youth due to their vulnerability. The NHS emphasizes vaping's risks and the need for age restrictions on vaping products.

American Cancer Society to push for $2 per pack cigarette tax increase in Maine
The American Cancer Society aims to raise Maine's cigarette tax by $2 per pack to reduce smoking rates and generate $48 million annually. They also advocate for insurance coverage of specialized cancer testing, urging carriers to cover the cost of biomarker testing. This testing helps identify effective cancer treatments. Despite opposition from health plans, the tax increase could yield nearly $100 million yearly, addressing the state's budget shortfall. Switching to e-cigarettes may ease respiratory symptoms, offering hope for smokers
Switching from conventional cigarettes to e-cigarettes shows potential for improving respiratory health, especially in reducing smoking-related symptoms. A recent study suggested that transitioning entirely to e-cigarettes might alleviate these symptoms. Analysis from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health study waves 2-6 revealed that individuals who switched to e-cigarettes or quit smoking completely experienced symptom improvement, compared to those who continued smoking conventional cigarettes. Factors like age, race, and comorbidities influenced respiratory health outcomes. While further research is needed to confirm these findings, the study highlights the short-term benefits of transitioning to e-cigarettes for smokers struggling to quit and emphasizes the need for long-term health investigations.

Knowledge and Attitudes of Patent Medicine Vendors towards Tobacco Harm Reduction in Ebonyi State, Nigeria: A Mixed Methods Study
Cigarette smoking is highly prevalent in Nigeria, and while most smokers are aware of its harmful effects and express a desire to quit, they often struggle to do so successfully. Tobacco harm reduction (THR) products, such as electronic cigarettes, have shown promise in aiding smoking cessation. Integrating patent medicine vendors (PMVs), who play a significant role in public health initiatives in Nigeria, could enhance the accessibility of THR products to smokers. A study was conducted in Ebonyi State, Nigeria, using a convergent mixed-methods design to assess PMVs' knowledge and attitudes toward THR. Data were collected through a cross-sectional survey of 320 PMVs and in-depth interviews (IDIs) with 25 PMVs. Findings revealed low awareness and poor knowledge of THR among PMVs. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's chi-square tests, while qualitative data were analyzed thematically.
