The surprising number of adults who both smoke and vape

A study by University College London reveals the increase in "dual use" of smoking and vaping among adults in England, particularly in young adults. Researchers noted a rise from 3.5% in 2016 to 5.2% in 2024, with 34% of smokers now also vaping. The proportion of smokers who vape daily and smoke less has increased, possibly indicating a shift towards harm reduction. Concerns were raised about misconceptions on vaping harms hindering smoking cessation efforts. Accurate messaging on smoking and vaping risks is crucial for informed decision-making. Initiatives like the swap-to-stop scheme aim to support full switching from smoking to vaping for improved public health.

One in 20 adults both smoke and vape, study finds

A University College London (UCL) study funded by Cancer Research UK analyzed survey data from 2016 to 2024, revealing a sharp rise in dual use of cigarettes and vapes. The percentage of people engaging in both behaviors increased from 3.5% to 5.2%, equivalent to a shift from 1 in 30 people to 1 in 20. The most significant surge occurred in 2021, coinciding with the growing popularity of e-cigarettes. The increase was especially pronounced among young adults, with two-thirds of 18- to 24-year-olds now smoking and vaping, compared to just one in five in 2016. The study also highlighted changes in dual-use habits: daily smokers who don’t vape daily dropped from 32% to 15%, while daily vapers who don’t smoke daily rose from 8% to 22%. Researchers attribute these changes to the growing number of frequent vapers among young adult dual users.

E-cigarettes are not associated with post-acute COVID-19 syndrome among US adults

A cross-sectional study of 107,249 American adults found no independent link between e-cigarette use and PCS after COVID-19 infection. Factors associated with PCS included female gender, cigarette smoking, and other health conditions. Sensitivity analyses supported the study's conclusions. Previous research on e-cigarettes and PCS showed mixed results, with some suggesting potential harm. The lack of mediation by COPD contradicts previous findings. Mechanisms linking e-cigarettes to health issues were explored. The study had strengths in representation and analytical methods but acknowledged limitations in missing data and self-reporting bias.

Skepticism Over FDA Bid to Mandate Very Low-Nicotine Cigarettes

The FDA proposed capping nicotine levels in tobacco products at a low level to reduce addiction and smoking-related harm. While the agency aims to decrease dependence, experts have concerns about potential unintended consequences, like users seeking higher-nicotine sources. Critics argue against the mandate, fearing a growth in illicit markets and limited harm reduction options. Correcting misconceptions on nicotine and risks is crucial. Implementing the plan would require accessible reduced-risk products and accurate information. The feasibility and effectiveness of such a substantial intervention remain uncertain in the US context.
