No evidence vaping leads to smoking among youth, review by leading health experts finds
A review of 126 studies challenges the 'gateway theory' that vaping leads to smoking, pointing to a decrease in youth smoking as vaping rates rise. Research found no significant evidence supporting vaping as a cause of increased smoking among young people. While individual-level data showed a slight correlation between vaping and smoking, population-level data suggested otherwise. The decline in youth smoking in the U.S. has not been conclusively linked to vaping. Further research is needed to determine causation. Additionally, previous studies from the same team suggest that vaping can aid adults in quitting smoking.

The Public Health Triumph No One’s Talking About
Teen smoking has dramatically declined, with only 1.7% of high school students reported as current smokers in the 2024 National Youth Tobacco Survey, down from 8.3% in 2016. Despite this significant drop, there have been no celebratory announcements from the CDC, the FDA, the surgeon general, or the anti-smoking public health community. The question remains: why not?
