Smoking/vaping combo poses health risks, research suggests
A new study warns against the misconception that switching between cigarettes and vape pens reduces cancer risk. Dual users of both have similar exposure to nicotine and carcinogens as exclusive cigarette smokers. Tobacco cessation programs are urged as a safer alternative, as dual-use is deemed ineffective for health protection. Clinicians are advised to promote awareness on the risks of dual-use, emphasizing the importance of evidence-based cessation programs. Stronger FDA regulation of tobacco products, including illegal ones, is recommended to safeguard public health. The research underscores the need to prioritize tobacco prevention and cessation efforts.

Why CDC cuts are being called ‘the greatest gift to tobacco industry in the last half-century’
Terrie Hall, a former smoker, appeared in anti-smoking ads despite battling cancer. The campaign, run by the CDC, helped millions quit smoking. Following recent closures at the Office on Smoking and Health (OSH), funded by the CDC, concerns arise about the future of tobacco control efforts. Former employees fear a setback in progress, potentially leading to increased smoking rates. With the shutdown of OSH and changes at the FDA's Center for Tobacco Products, monitoring of tobacco trends and regulations is at risk. The move coincides with a positive climate for the tobacco industry, raising worries about public health consequences amidst reduced federal support for anti-smoking initiatives.

EU Commission’s New Tobacco Tax Plan: A Direct Attack on Public Health, the Poor, and Common Sense
The World Vapers’ Alliance expresses concern over the EU's proposed nicotine tax increase, including a 30% raise in cigarette prices and higher taxes on vaping products. The alliance warns that this move would disproportionately affect low-income smokers, hinder quitting efforts, and fuel anti-EU sentiments. Director Michael Landl criticizes the Commission for overlooking public health and social implications, urging a reversal of the harmful taxation plans. Landl emphasizes the need to incentivize smokers to switch to safer alternatives by lowering taxes on products like vaping. The WVA calls on the EU to prioritize citizens' well-being and reconsider the detrimental tax hike proposal.

WHO Dysfunction and Corruption
The Coalition of Asia Pacific Tobacco Harm Reduction Advocates (CAPHRA) is calling for an urgent review of funding to the WHO’s Western Pacific and Southeast Asia offices, citing governance failures, health inequalities, and corruption concerns. Despite leadership changes and reform promises, CAPHRA claims the WHO continues to prioritize bureaucracy over real action, especially as tobacco-related deaths and noncommunicable diseases remain high. The group warns that continued funding risks supporting a broken system that fails to address critical regional health issues.

UAE turns to less harmful nicotine products to help smokers quit
Smoking rates remain high in the UAE and Middle East but new smoke-free nicotine alternatives entering the market could be critical to efforts to help people kick the habit. The UAE has approved the sale of synthetic nicotine pouches - subject to sellers meeting safety standards set out by the government - which are taken orally and held under the gum for about 40 minutes to gradually release a nicotine dose.

All Vapes Are Flavored Vapes, Some Just Have Cigarette Flavors
Currently, only some vaping products are labeled as “flavored,” even though all of them contain added flavors—including those that taste like tobacco or menthol. In reality, vaping products fall into two categories: those that mimic the taste of combustible cigarettes (tobacco and menthol) and those that do not. A more accurate terminology would be to refer to them as “cigarette-flavored” and “non-cigarette flavored.” This would better reflect the truth that there are no unflavored vaping products on the market, and that, although deemed “tobacco products” by the FDA, these products do not actually contain tobacco.

New York Senate Sees Sense and Pulls Nicotine Pouch Flavour Ban
New York Senate Bill S443B, aimed at restricting nicotine pouch distribution and banning certain flavors, was withdrawn last week. The bill's arguments against youth use and health risks lacked strong evidence. Nicotine pouches are wrongly compared to vaping products, and flavor bans are criticized for limiting harm-reduction options. Restrictions may violate consumer rights and hinder smoking reduction efforts. The bill contradicted the FDA's harm-reduction strategies. Ultimately, hampering access to safer nicotine options harms public health. The withdrawal of the bill was a victory for rationality and sensible policymaking in New York.
