Smoking in United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, smoking is allowed but tobacco products are subject to certain regulations. Under these regulations, there is a complete ban on all forms of tobacco advertising. Cigarettes can be purchased online, but not through vending machines. The importation of cigarettes for trade is allowed with an import license. Additionally, health warnings on cigarette packaging are required, and the minimum legal age for purchase is 18 years. Legal restrictions on smoking in public places are also enforced. Cigarettes in the UK are subject to an excise tax of 50.56% and a total taxation rate of 83.72%. Statistics show a gradual decline in the current smoking prevalence in the UK since 2000. There were approximately 6.7 million current adult smokers in the country in 2024, representing an adult current smoking prevalence of 11.8%. This was 13.1% in 2022, and 27.1% in 2000. Smoking prevalence was higher among males with 13.6% than among females with 10.1% in 2024. Daily smoking prevalence among adults was 9.1% overall, 8.1% among females, and 10.2% among males in 2024. In 2021, smoking led to 75,848 deaths in the UK, of which 44,400 deaths were among males and 31,448 deaths were among females. This shows that smoking consisted 11.05% of all deaths in the country, including 12.6% of all male deaths and 9.42% of all female deaths.

The US and UK see vaping very differently. Here's why
An outbreak of a vaping-related illness in the United States has sickened hundreds and may be linked to the deaths of seven people, and an epidemic of youth vaping there has been called a "public health crisis." [...] in the UK, there doesn't appear to be an outbreak of vaping-related sickness. Neither has vaping's popularity soared among young people who never smoked. Rather, e-cigarettes have been embraced mostly as a way for adults to quit combustible cigarettes. Indeed, health authorities in the UK stand by their support for e-cigarettes as a cessation tool.

UK attacked for defence of flavoured e-cigarettes
The government agency charged with protecting the nation’s health is under fire for defending e-cigarette flavours.
A leading European expert on tobacco control said that flavours were responsible for luring children into vaping, amid mounting concern over its effects on human health. On Saturday, England’s chief medical officer, Prof Dame Sally Davies, also expressed concern about children using e-cigarettes. In an interview with Civil Service World, she asked: “Is this a ticking time bomb? Will they turn out to have long-term consequences?”

Banning flavoured vaping products ‘would drive smokers back to cigarettes’
Responding to US President Donald Trump’s plan to axe flavourings due to concerns about youths taking up e-cigarettes, PHE said the flavours helped smokers switch from more dangerous tobacco. Martin Dockrell, head of tobacco control at PHE, said it plans to publish a comprehensive evidence review on the safety of e-cigarettes early next year. In a statement to the PA news agency, he said: “E-cigarette flavours are an important advantage that vapes have over smoking and play an important part in encouraging smokers to switch.

GPs told to recommend vaping to smokers as it IS safer than cigarettes
MANY GPs and pharmacists are reluctant to recommend vaping to smokers due to confusion about safety, research suggests. For smokers attempting to quit, vaping can be a good alternative to cigarettes as it delivers the nicotine without other toxic substances like tar. However, a worrying 93 percent of healthcare professionals were unaware of Public Health England’s position that vaping is at least 95 percent less harmful than smoking.

E-cigarettes do not normalise smoking for young people – study
The sharp increase in the use of e-cigarettes has not led more British children to take up cigarettes or regard smoking as normal, the first study of its kind has shown.
Some health experts and anti-smoking groups have expressed concern that the growth of e-cigarettes might normalise the idea of smoking for young people.
But the study led by Cardiff University researchers suggests the number of teenagers who said they had tried smoking or thought it was acceptable to smoke has continued to fall despite the rise in e-cigarette use.

E-cigarette evidence update - patterns and use in adults and young people
Smoking prevalence is at an all-time low in England, but over six million people are still smoking. The recently published NHS Long Term Plan hails prevention as a way to save over 500,000 lives across the next ten years, and helping smokers to quit is a key part of the plan.
There are 2.5 million e-cigarette users across the country and we’re used to seeing people vaping. As popularity has increased over the past ten years, so too have discussions about their safety and how effective they are for quitting smoking.

Can Tech Change The Way We Tackle Smoking?
It’s estimated that every year around 207,000 children aged 11-15 start smoking. Children who live with parents or siblings who smoke are three times more likely to smoke themselves and with 14.9% of adults classified as smokers, it is a problem that will persist. [...] Anyone with even a passing interest in health knows the risks, which makes it even more shocking to see that 15 percent of the population (an estimated 7.4 million people) are smokers. It’s a habit that costs the NHS £2.5 billion a year in England alone, [...]

UK Supermarket Chain Criticized for Displaying Vapes in Exactly the Right Place
Where should vaping products be stocked in stores? That question was sharply raised in response to Sainsbury’s, a British supermarket chain, placing e-cigarettes and vaping liquids on its shelves next to nicotine replacement products like patches and gums. Although British political hostility to vaping is nowhere near that seen in the US, opposition inevitably followed. Conservative Member of Parliament Bob Blackman, chair of the Parliamentary Group on Smoking and Health, blasted Sainsbury’s: “It’s wrong to have them on open shelves [...]

The fate of vape: Vaping industry predictions for 2019
Opening up a brick and mortar shop can be a hectic process, not to mention that it usually requires a lot of financial resources. As a result, many new shops and businesses are opening exclusively online, and at the same time, the offline ones are also migrating to the internet too. This move can help shops make an impressive amount of savings. For further cost effectiveness, vape shop owners may think about migrating their business to a vape oriented marketplace like Vawoo.
