Smoking in United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, smoking is allowed but tobacco products are subject to certain regulations. Under these regulations, there is a complete ban on all forms of tobacco advertising. Cigarettes can be purchased online, but not through vending machines. The importation of cigarettes for trade is allowed with an import license. Additionally, health warnings on cigarette packaging are required, and the minimum legal age for purchase is 18 years. Legal restrictions on smoking in public places are also enforced. Cigarettes in the UK are subject to an excise tax of 50.56% and a total taxation rate of 83.72%. Statistics show a gradual decline in the current smoking prevalence in the UK since 2000. There were approximately 6.7 million current adult smokers in the country in 2024, representing an adult current smoking prevalence of 11.8%. This was 13.1% in 2022, and 27.1% in 2000. Smoking prevalence was higher among males with 13.6% than among females with 10.1% in 2024. Daily smoking prevalence among adults was 9.1% overall, 8.1% among females, and 10.2% among males in 2024. In 2021, smoking led to 75,848 deaths in the UK, of which 44,400 deaths were among males and 31,448 deaths were among females. This shows that smoking consisted 11.05% of all deaths in the country, including 12.6% of all male deaths and 9.42% of all female deaths.

UK: ASH Calls For Smoking Cessation Training for Mental Health Staff

Data gathered across the globe keep indicating that mental health patients are more likely to smoke than individuals who do not suffer from psychological or psychiatric conditions. Moreover, these individuals are more likely to find it harder to quit. [...] Sadly, the ASH report has highlighted concerns reported by staff who felt they were ill-equipped to support their patients, with the charity adding that the current training of mental health nurses and psychiatrists to help their patients to quit smoking was “woefully inadequate”.

Risk-takers predisposed to smoking and e-cigarette use, new study suggests

Research by the University of Bristol has found that the association between smoking and e-cigarette use could be explained by a broader genetic susceptibility to risk-taking.

The findings imply that the genetic influences associated with people taking up smoking also influence people being e-cigarette users; these were also found to be associated with risk-taking behaviours more generally, such as externalising disorders in childhood. Dr Jasmine Khouja [...] said: “There is concern that young people who are non-smokers might be more likely to become a cigarette smoker if they have access to e-cigarettes.

Fewer than quarter of Scots want restrictions on sale of e-cigarettes and vaping products

Research for the Scottish Grocers’ Federation (SGF) found only 24% of people agreed that access to such products, or information about them, should be restricted.

With almost half those questioned were opposed to this – with 24% saying they “strongly disagreed” and a further 24% who said they “tended to disagree”. That includes 66% of 16 to-24-year-olds who were opposed to such restrictions. As the research was released, the SGF said it was time for politicians and public health leaders to join with them to “ensure e-cigarettes are properly positioned to help Scotland meet its smoke-free target”.

Ethnic minorities in England less likely to report using e-cigarettes to reduce smoking

Ethnic minority groups may be missing out on a means of reducing smoking. A household survey in England has found it is less common for smokers of Asian, Arab, and other ethnicities to use e-cigarettes to try to reduce their cigarette consumption or when they are not allowed to smoke than those of White ethnicity.

This comparative underuse of e-cigarettes is important because ethnic minority groups in England appear to be at higher risk of smoking-related diseases. NICE guidance says that reducing smoking prevalence could reduce those health inequalities more than any other measure.

Vaping firms want advert rules relaxed

A vaping trade association has called on the government to relax regulations as part of a consultation on the future of the industry.

UK Vaping Industry Association, whose members include the big tobacco companies, issued a wide-ranging report yesterday recommending an easing of restrictions covering advertising, packaging and product sizes. The proposals to the Department of Health and Social Care include greater advertising freedoms starting with a government-led communications campaign explaining the potential harm reduction of switching from smoking to vaping and the introduction of switching messages on products. The effectiveness of using e‐cigarettes for quitting smoking compared to other cessation methods among adults in the United Kingdom

Evidence on the effectiveness of electronic cigarettes (ECs) to facilitate abstinence from smoking is limited. The current study aimed to estimate the relative effectiveness of ECs and smoking cessation medication compared with using no help, accounting for frequency of use of ECs. Four consecutive wave‐to‐wave transitions (waves 1‐2, 2‐3, 3‐4 or 4‐5) of a longitudinal online survey collected between 2012 and 2017 were analysed. Time between waves ranged between 12 and 17 months. Cigarette smokers at the baseline wave who attempted to quit smoking between waves were included.

Dr Máirtín McDermott [...] said: "Our results show that when used daily, e-cigarettes help people to quit smoking, compared to no help at all. Smokers could pay £16,000 more in life assurance premiums

On this year's No Smoking Day, Royal London states that mon-smokers could be eligible for lower rate premiums if they have not smoked tobacco, or used any nicotine replacement products including e-cigarettes, for 12 months.

Vaping ban would be "absolutely disgraceful"

A VAPING shop owner in Worcester insists it would be “madness” to ban the e-cigarettes that have improved the life of his customers.

It comes on the back of news that vaping could soon be banned in the UK under recommendations set out by the World Health Organisation (WHO). [...] Andrew Connellan, who runs Connect2Vapes in Broad Street, Worcester, warned health officials should not throw out the baby with the bath water when it comes to tackling issues such as cheaper substitutes for branded products.

“My view is the same as that of the NHS,” said Mr Connellan.
