Smoking in United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, smoking is allowed but tobacco products are subject to certain regulations. Under these regulations, there is a complete ban on all forms of tobacco advertising. Cigarettes can be purchased online, but not through vending machines. The importation of cigarettes for trade is allowed with an import license. Additionally, health warnings on cigarette packaging are required, and the minimum legal age for purchase is 18 years. Legal restrictions on smoking in public places are also enforced. Cigarettes in the UK are subject to an excise tax of 50.56% and a total taxation rate of 83.72%. Statistics show a gradual decline in the current smoking prevalence in the UK since 2000. There were approximately 6.7 million current adult smokers in the country in 2024, representing an adult current smoking prevalence of 11.8%. This was 13.1% in 2022, and 27.1% in 2000. Smoking prevalence was higher among males with 13.6% than among females with 10.1% in 2024. Daily smoking prevalence among adults was 9.1% overall, 8.1% among females, and 10.2% among males in 2024. In 2021, smoking led to 75,848 deaths in the UK, of which 44,400 deaths were among males and 31,448 deaths were among females. This shows that smoking consisted 11.05% of all deaths in the country, including 12.6% of all male deaths and 9.42% of all female deaths.

9 Best Vape Brands for 2022

If you’re new to vaping, you might be confused by the number of brands available. In fact, almost every day I seem to get an email from a new vape brand I’ve never heard of before.

At the same time, there is a stable of reliable brands that have proved themselves over the years with consistent high quality devices. That’s not to say every device they make is a winner – every brand has their big successes as well as some that don’t quite make the mark. [...] There’s also some smaller brands who have focussed on creating some excellent products – I’ve included them under honourable mentions.

The NHS vs nicotine: Could prescription e-cigarettes be the solution?

6.1 million people in England still smoke.

64,000 people died from smoking in England in 2019.

25% increase in 18-34-year-old smokers in the first lockdown.

652,000 more young adults now smoke than before the pandemic.

Whilst smoking rates have been steadily declining over recent years, from 20% of UK adults in 2011 to 14% in 2019, recent evidence suggests that there was a 25% increase in young adults 18-34 who smoked during the first Covid-19 lockdown in 2020. Unfortunately, smoking is not a temporary vice, and this increase remains today.

Even with all our anti-smoking policies, I’m still buying cigarettes – what will actually make smokers quit for good?

I am among the one in five people in the UK who smoke, contributing packet by packet to the £18billion we spend yearly on tobacco products.

My parents have kept the habit their whole lives, as did both sets of grandparents before them. Having started in my early 20s and maintained a box-a-day addiction ever since, in many ways I’m a walking target for tobacco companies.

In theory, that should also make me a target for health interventions, too. But I see the gory pictures on the box and ignore them, I pay the extra duty each time it’s upped, and I continue to light up despite knowing the implications.

PACKET IN, SAJID Plan to ban smoking OUTSIDE pubs slapped down by ‘outraged’ ministers

HEALTH Secretary Sajid Javid’s bid to ban smoking outside pubs and clubs has been slapped down by colleagues.

He pushed for a pavement ban but the audacious idea was killed off by “outraged” cabinet ministers.
New Communities Secretary Michael Gove — who enjoys the odd smoke — delivered a killer blow to Mr Javid’s plan when he insisted that stretched local authorities would never be able to police the ban.

The policy, recommended by the Government’s Health Promotion Taskforce, would have outlawed smoking directly outside venues such as pubs and restaurants.

SMOKING RISES Stress of pandemic sees more people take up smoking for first time in decades

The figures for 2020 are expected to show a small increase in the number of smokers Britain for the first time since the 1970s. Ministers are committed to a ‘smoke-free’ Britain by 2030 which would see fewer than five per cent of the adult population smoking tobacco. Tobacco industry insiders say sales have been up during the pandemic as more people struggled with the anxiety and stress caused by lockdowns.

Earlier this year Health Sec Sajid Javid allowed doctors to prescribe vaping to smokers who want to quit.

Great Expectations

Ever since the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) recognized the case for tobacco harm reduction (THR) in a 2007 report and Public Health England concluded that e-cigarettes were at least 95 percent less harmful than combustible cigarettes in 2015, the United Kingdom has been a forerunner in including reduced-risk products in its tobacco control strategy. The country’s 2017 Tobacco Control Plan (TCP), published by the department of health, stresses the importance of innovation and less harmful alternatives. Most anti-smoking and public health organizations as well as medical institutions in the U.K. support vape products as a reduced-risk alternative to cigarettes.

Is CBD legal in the UK and Europe?

It often comes up in the crosshairs of politicians and political editorialists, who see it as an opportunity to mix up many subjects.

Unfortunately, this is sometimes what happens when it comes to the legality of CBD in The UK.

Confused with cannabis, cannabidiol is, however, not the same substance. This is why it is necessary to take stock of the legality of these products in the UK.

FCTC COP9: All eyes on UK as pressure mounts over WHO harm reduction stance

[...] tobacco harm reduction advocates are hoping the UK will use the gathering to put pressure on the global health body to drop its opposition to vaping and other less harmful nicotine products like snus and nicotine pouches.

“COP9 could be a critical turning point,” UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA) head John Dunne said in a statement.

“At the Conference, the United Kingdom has a duty to lead the charge against the WHO and be proud of its record so far. The UK delegation should use its influence to encourage other delegations to back the science and follow its example.”
