Smoking in United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, smoking is allowed but tobacco products are subject to certain regulations. Under these regulations, there is a complete ban on all forms of tobacco advertising. Cigarettes can be purchased online, but not through vending machines. The importation of cigarettes for trade is allowed with an import license. Additionally, health warnings on cigarette packaging are required, and the minimum legal age for purchase is 18 years. Legal restrictions on smoking in public places are also enforced. Cigarettes in the UK are subject to an excise tax of 50.56% and a total taxation rate of 83.72%. Statistics show a gradual decline in the current smoking prevalence in the UK since 2000. There were approximately 6.7 million current adult smokers in the country in 2024, representing an adult current smoking prevalence of 11.8%. This was 13.1% in 2022, and 27.1% in 2000. Smoking prevalence was higher among males with 13.6% than among females with 10.1% in 2024. Daily smoking prevalence among adults was 9.1% overall, 8.1% among females, and 10.2% among males in 2024. In 2021, smoking led to 75,848 deaths in the UK, of which 44,400 deaths were among males and 31,448 deaths were among females. This shows that smoking consisted 11.05% of all deaths in the country, including 12.6% of all male deaths and 9.42% of all female deaths.

Dentist Answers the Most Common Questions Regarding Teeth
Vaping however does still have an effect on your oral health - and not for the better. Exposing your gums to a hot, drying vapour will increase the risk of gum disease and bad breath, whilst flavoured vapes will increase the amount of sugar in your mouth, potentially causing cavities.

A Comparison of US and UK Physicians Advice on Nicotine and Vaping
In 2020, an academic paper suggested that more than 80% of U.S. physicians mistakenly thought that nicotine was a carcinogen. The implication of this finding was that perhaps physicians thought vaping (and even nicotine-replacement therapy) to be almost as dangerous as smoking. But physicians are busy people and I suggest that some, maybe most, might have misunderstood the question in the survey and assumed the researchers were asking about smoking.
To test this hypothesis, I surveyed physicians to learn more about their actual knowledge and opinion. Additionally, the UK government is (...)

Scientists Discover Cause of Smoking Addiction – And How to Cure It
A cure for smoking could be on the horizon after scientists discovered how the brain becomes addicted to nicotine. Smoking is the single biggest cause of cancer in the UK and is responsible for more than a quarter of all cancer deaths. University of Cambridge scientists studied brain scans of more than 800 people taken when they were 14, 19 and 24 and analysed any impact smoking had. They found that smokers were more likely to have a smaller region in the frontal lobe called the left ventromedial prefrontal cortex.

The Government Is Right to Be Concerned About Youth Vaping, But It Mustn’t Overreach
No one wants vapes in the hands of children but the furore about advertising should be put into some perspective. For the tobacco industry, it is simply not sound business to market directly to children. The latest Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) survey estimates that (…)

The future of vaping looks a lot like cigarettes
Signs along the corridors of the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham warn: “No vaping until inside the show.” But inside Europe’s largest industry expo for vaping, it’s open season. For three days in May, nearly everyone at Vaper Expo UK is vaping nearly all the time. Visitors, about 20,000 in all, vape their way from one stand to the next, trying the samples with the use of disposable silicon mouthpieces in a nod towards sanitariness. [...]

UK Councils Ramp Up Pressure to Ban Disposable Vapes
Councils in the United Kingdom have issued a joint call to ban single-use vapes, citing environmental and child safety concerns. It’s the latest big development in a heated national debate, targeting disposables in what’s seen as one of the world’s most vape-friendly countries. The Local Government Association (LGA), which represents councils in England and Wales, wants a ban on the manufacture and sale of disposables by 2024. [...]

Switching to vapes ‘could save NHS more than half a billion a year’, study says
Half of England’s adult smokers making a switch to e-cigarettes could save the NHS more than £500 million per year, a study has claimed. Researchers at Brunel University London used data from NHS Digital, the Royal College of Physicians and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to identify the prevalence of smoking in each region. They found that between 2019 and 2021, 13.6% of people aged 18 and over in England smoked.
