Mortality from leading cancers in districts of England from 2002 to 2019: a population-based, spatiotemporal study

Cancers are the leading cause of death in England. We aimed to estimate trends in mortality from leading cancers from 2002 to 2019 for the 314 districts in England. We did a high-resolution spatiotemporal analysis of vital registration data from the UK Office for National Statistics using data on all deaths from the ten leading cancers in England from 2002 to 2019. We used a Bayesian hierarchical model to obtain robust estimates of age-specific and cause-specific death rates. [...]

Youth vaping: The impact of e-cigarette use in schools

As a government consultation on measures to tackle youth vaping comes to an end, BBC South East speaks to head teachers, teaching staff and students to find out the impact e-cigarettes are having in schools. You find them asking to go out of the lessons to go into the toilets," said Sade Afolabi, a teacher in Surrey, and spokeswoman for the NASUWT teaching union. "It is damaging because when you quantify how much time is lost it's quite a big loss to learning," she added.

A Valuable Vaping Guide for Health and Social Service Providers

On November 16, the United Kingdom’s National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training (NCSCT), released: “Vaping: a guide for health and social care professionals.” It combines a summary of best available evidence with recommendations for how practitioners should act on this knowledge. The term “e-cigarettes” has now been abandoned in favor of “vapes,” as the new guide explains. And its substantial evolution includes updated science, the deliberate involvement of people with lived experience in its creation, and responses to increasingly topical vape-related issues and misconceptions.

Vaping: Is it really that harmful? What are the side effects and dangers to young people?

Vaping in Scotland is on the rise. Worryingly, there’s been an increase in the number of children and teenagers vaping, and this is causing concern. To tackle this problem, the Scottish Government is launching a vaping information campaign to help stamp out the growing habit among children and young people. The campaign targets parents and carers of children aged between 10 and 17 and encourages them to talk to their children about the serious health risks of vaping, getting them to rethink picking up a vape and beginning a habit that could have harmful consequences.

Thousand-puff disposable vapes expected to hit UK market early next year

Vape manufacturing and technology firm Smoore has developed a 1,000-puff disposable device, which it expects to hit the market early next year. The device provides a significant improvement on the industry standard 600-puff devices, while remaining within UK regulations, the company says. Typically disposable devices fail to use around half of the nicotine-containing liquid within the cotton wick, Smoore claims. “It’s like a wet towel, it’s hard to fully extract the water,” said Rex Zhang, Smoore’s strategy director. “Half of the e-liquid is wasted, and that’s a lot of money wasted for consumers as well,” Zhang added.
