UK’s vape ban highlights benefit of big tobacco’s run-off strategy
Anyone who has ever attempted a self-help plan knows that transformations are hard. That holds true for tobacco companies, too. They would like to think that they can build a sustainable future selling vapes and snus (oral smokeless tobacco) from the embers of their traditional cigarette business. But — as the UK’s ban on disposable vapes suggests — the growth potential of alternative nicotine delivery products appears limited.

Will Ireland’s Public Vape Consultation Trigger Bans?
A public consultation to help determine the future of vaping in Ireland has come to an end. The results aren’t yet known, but tobacco harm reduction advocates are nervous about the potential outcomes. The consultation, conducted by the Department of Health, began in November 2023 and ended on January 5. It asked the public to participate in a survey, picking from different measures to “decrease the appeal of nicotine inhaling products to young people, further denormalize smoking, and improve public health.”

‘Vaping left me tired and anxious – the ban is a great thing’
A former vaper worried about the impact on his long-term health has warned that the “barrier of entry” to vaping is currently too low as he welcomed the Government’s plans to ban disposable e-cigarettes. Disposable vapes are set to be barred after the Government announced on Monday new measures to tackle the number of young people taking up vaping. Expected to be introduced across the UK, the ban will also ensure manufacturers produce plain packaging and will change how vapes are displayed in shops, moving them out of children’s sight.

The EU obscures its position on nicotine pouches and other low risk alternatives to smoking before the WHO conference COP10 in Panama
Now both snus, tobacco free snus (nicotine pouches) and ecigs are threatened by both the WHO and the EU. The Moderate party in government in Sweden and its Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson have always defended snus as a way to reduce tobacco harm. The Swedish Democrats, the Liberals, Christian Democrats and the Center Party agrees. We thus have a clear party majority in the Swedish Parliament for tobacco harm reduction. It is mainly thanks to the availability of snus, nicotine pouches, ecigs and heated tobacco that we have by far the lowest rate of daily smokers, 5.6% according to the Public Health Authority (2022) and by far the lowest rate of tobacco-related diseases in the EU. UK to ban disposable vapes, restrict flavours and do more stupid stuff
The UK government has decided it will ban disposable vapes and suggests it will ban vape flavours. This will trigger more smoking, more illicit trade and more workarounds. The problem of youth vaping is a non-problem and the government is reacting to a moral panic it doesn't understand. You may be aware that the UK government is in the process of caving in to a moral panic on vaping while taking pointless action on smoking.

Banning disposable e-cigarettes won’t stop kids vaping
The government thinks it has finally found a popular policy. Better still, it is a policy that it can implement, or at least legislate for. According to a press release from the Department of Health and Social Care, a ban on disposable vapes is supported by ‘nearly 70 per cent of parents, teachers, healthcare professionals and the general public’. The British public love a ban. Last month a survey found that 29 per cent of us want to close the nightclubs to deal with the remnants of Covid-19 and 20 per cent want to re-introduce lockdown.

The government’s proposals on single use vapes, flavours and packaging are misguided and will cost lives.
The New Nicotine Alliance is extremely disappointed to hear that the UK government plans to ban single use vapes, restrict many flavours which can help people quit smoking, enforce plain packaging, and severely reduce the visibility of life-saving products. The government’s response to the recent public consultation has ignored the most knowledgeable experts in tobacco control and put forth measures which will fail to tackle the issue of youth vaping and illicit sales, while also producing outcomes which will be damaging to public health.

Disposable vapes to be banned for children's health, government says
Disposable vapes are set to be banned as part of plans to tackle the rising number of young people taking up vaping, the government says. Measures will also be introduced to prevent vapes being marketed at children and to target under-age sales. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak suggested adult smokers trying to quit would still have access to alternatives like vapes under the proposals. The ban is expected to be introduced across the UK, the government said.

Disposable vapes banned to protect children's health
Disposable vapes will be banned in the UK as part of ambitious government plans to tackle the rise in youth vaping and protect children’s health, the Prime Minister has announced today (29 January 2024) on a visit to a school.
