expert reaction to observational study on vaping/smoking and blood pressure
An observational study on vaping, smoking, and blood pressure found that smoking, but not vaping, is significantly associated with elevated blood pressure and hypertension. The study did not account for participants' past smoking history, potentially impacting the results. Experts note that vaping may be a less harmful alternative to smoking, but emphasize that not vaping or smoking is the safest choice. Combining results from smokers and vapers to draw conclusions was criticized as flawed. The study highlights the association between smoking and adverse cardiovascular outcomes. However, it falls short in determining the specific effects of vaping on health outcomes.

GFN News #179 | UK VAPE CRACKDOWN BACKFIRES?
UK disposable vape ban: what’s changed, what hasn’t, and what’s next? In this episode of GFN News, Joanna Junak speaks with John Dunne (UK Vaping Industry Association) about how the market is responding to new regulation - rising black market activity, the shift from disposables to pod/open-tank systems, and why consumer behavior (including recycling) is still a challenge. They also address public confusion about relative harm compared to smoking, concerns around youth uptake, and why nicotine pouches may grow as an alternative in places where vaping isn’t practical.

Scientists accuse EU of misleading public on risks of smoke-free nicotine products
A group of European scientists has warned the European Commission that public statements about the risks of smoke-free nicotine products may be misleading and could undermine efforts to reduce smoking across Europe. The experts sent an open letter to the EC President Ursula von der Leyen, criticising official statements about the risks of smoke-free products, calling them “false and misleading". The academics specialising in medicine, toxicology, epidemiology and addiction science argue that recent claims suggesting alternatives such as e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products and nicotine pouches may be as harmful as cigarettes contradict established scientific evidence.

Wisconsin Urged to Make Smoking-Cessation Tools Less Accessible
The American Lung Association urges Wisconsin to address high smoking rates by implementing policies proven to save lives, like raising the tobacco sale age to 21 and equalizing taxes on e-cigarettes and cigarettes. However, they fail to mention safer nicotine products like vapes and snus, which have shown higher quit rates than nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). Despite evidence supporting the effectiveness of these alternatives, the ALA and Wisconsin health department focus on restricting access to them, citing concerns about addiction among youth. Critics argue that encouraging adult smokers to switch to safer options, like e-cigarettes, would be a more beneficial approach to reducing smoking-related harm.

SCIENCE OF VAPING #7 | THE “DRY PUFF” PROBLEM
In this episode of Science Series with Roberto Sussman, we tackle a deceptively simple question: how do you determine optimal vaping settings in a laboratory? Roberto explains why machine “puffing” can produce unrealistic overheating conditions that real users would immediately avoid (too hot, bad taste), and how that can distort measurements and conclusions in some studies. We also cover the “dry puff”/dry heat phenomenon, why airflow and power settings matter, and how modern devices differ from early closed “cigalike” systems.

Letter: Don't give Big Tobacco what they want
The Fargo Cass Board of Health seeks a ban on flavored nicotine products to tackle youth vaping, causing concern among businesses like Sports Vape. The ban proposal, aiming to curb underage use, is criticized for misrepresenting the marketing targeting children. It's argued that banning flavors won't deter online purchases or address the root issues. The ban could boost e-commerce and hurt local businesses. While efforts to reduce youth nicotine use are crucial, an abrupt industry shutdown risks job losses and economic strain. A petition opposes the ban, urging city commissioners to reconsider. Zach Johnson owns Sports Vape in Fargo.

Mouse torture experiment claims third-hand vape harms
A study exposed mice to vape aerosol residue on fabrics in a lab setting, resulting in increased blood clotting markers and altered inflammatory responses. While warning about potential cardiovascular risks from “third-hand” exposure, the study's extreme conditions differ vastly from real-life scenarios. The mice were exposed intensively to vape residue, unlike typical human exposure, raising doubts about the findings' applicability to everyday settings. Despite notable biological changes in mice, the study's limitations prevent direct translation to human risks. Researchers emphasized that the study's controlled conditions may not accurately reflect the risks of normal exposure to third-hand vaping residue in homes.

England May Ban Vaping in Cars When Kids Are Present
England is considering a ban on vaping in cars with children to lower exposure to secondhand smoke. This proposal, part of a public consultation, aligns with efforts under a tobacco harm reduction bill. Critics argue against equating vaping with smoking, citing minimal risks from vapor compared to smoke. Advocates stress the importance of recognizing vaping's role in smoking cessation. Enforcement concerns and potential unintended consequences raise doubts about the ban's efficacy. Vaping remains permitted outside certain locations, acknowledging its harm reduction potential. The ban could perpetuate misinformation and harm smokers trying to quit. Public feedback is encouraged to influence the decision before the May 8 consultation deadline.

The Irreconcilable Conflict Principle (redux)
The governing idea of tobacco control is an irreconcilable conflict between the interests of the tobacco industry and public health. The idea is wrong and dangerous. GFN.TV Interviews #82 | How Nicotine Pouches Finished What Snus Started?
Sweden’s smoke-free success is often credited to snus, but that’s only half the story. While snus appealed to many men looking to quit smoking, for women the smell, taste, and feel left something to be desired. For years, women were left without a viable alternative. That changed with nicotine pouches. Tobacco-free, discreet, and socially acceptable, they became the missing solution. In this GFN Interviews, Carissa Düring explains why nicotine pouches didn’t just complement the Sweden Model, they completed it, delivering the silver bullet public health refuses to acknowledge.
