One million people in France quit daily smoking habits in the space of a year, according to a new survey by the country’s public health agency, which claims anti-smoking measures like neutral packaging are behind the decline.
Smoking in France
Smoking is regulated and allowed in France but there are some restrictions and regulations on tobacco. Under these regulations, the sale of cigarettes is permitted only in tobacco shops (le bureau de tabac) with a license. Purchasing cigarettes online and from vending machines is not permitted, while importing cigarettes for trade is allowed with an appropriate license. All forms of advertising of tobacco products including cigarettes are banned. Additionally, health warnings on cigarette packaging are required, the minimum legal age for purchasing them is 18 years, and there are legal restrictions on smoking in public places. Cigarettes are subject to a total taxation rate of 83.78%, and an excise tax rate of 12%. Despite these regulatory measures, in 2024, France had around 15.7 million current adult smokers, representing an adult current smoking prevalence of 28.3%. Among adult males, the current smoking prevalence was 31.5%, while among adult females it was 25.5% in 2024. Back in 2022, this prevalence was 29.2%. The adult daily smoking prevalence was 22.7% in 2023. Mortality data show that in 2021 tobacco smoking led to 54,940 deaths in the country, including 40,956 among males and 13,984 among females. Overall, smoking comprised 8.55% of all deaths in France in 2021, including 12.7% of male deaths and 4.37% of female deaths.

French President Macron Is a Vaper; Does It Matter?
Following the publication of a photo taken last week, French President Emmanuel Macron instantly became the world’s biggest vaping celebrity, easily leapfrogging past lesser lights like Leonardo DiCaprio and Katy Perry.
The image, apparently taken by Macron’s official photographer, shows the unshaven French leader heading to his office with a stack of files. He’s wearing a black hoodie with the insignia of an elite French commando unit, and carrying a vape device, almost (but not quite!) hidden in his right hand. (The image is shown in both tweets below.)

Study: Women smoke fewer cigarettes than men but find it more difficult to quit
A study of more than 35,000 smokers has found that women smoke fewer cigarettes than men but are less likely to quit. The research is presented at ESC Congress 2021. "In our study, women who used smoking cessation services had higher rates of overweight or obesity, depression, and anxiety compared to men and kicked the habit less often. Our findings highlight the need to provide smoking cessation interventions tailored to the needs of women."

Could Covid be treated with nicotine? French researchers are trying to find out
It all started with clinical observations that the proportion of smokers in hospitalised Covid patients appeared to be less than the general population.
"This has been observed, and it is accepted as an epidemiological fact, that when you take patient populations with Covid, the proportion of smokers is significantly lower than in the general population,” said Zahir Amoura, a doctor at the Pitié-Salpétrière hospital in Paris, told RFI. "Of course, that does not mean we think people should start smoking to protect themselves from Covid,” he insisted. “Smoking is a scourge. It’s important to repeat that.”

Macron calls for 'a tobacco-free generation' in efforts to cut cancer deaths
French President Emmanuel Macron has marked World Cancer Day by announcing a ten-year strategy to reduce deaths from the disease by 50 percent. French funding for cancer research is to be boosted by one fifth, with campaigns planned against the excessive consumption of both alcohol and tobacco. Currently, 150,000 French people die every year from cancer. President Macron wants to target the "avoidable" forms of the disease, and reduce that figure to 100,000.

Study: French Teen Vapers Were Less Likely to Smoke Than Non-Vapers
Daily smoking has always been very popular amongst French teens. The study titled, “Does e-cigarette experimentation increase the transition to daily smoking among young ever-smokers in France?” looks at whether e-cig experimentation, which is also very common, increases the likelihood of smoking. Using retrospective data from a 2017 French national representative survey of almost 40,000 participants, the researchers analyzed the link between vaping and smoking. The number of participants who had ever smoked was 21,401, and within this group, adolescents who reported having ever used e-cigarettes, were less likely [...]

Sign and Share Petition to Halt EU-Wide Vaping Tax
The New Nicotine Alliance (NNA), a UK registered charitable incorporated organisation “concerned with improving public health, through a greater understanding of “new” (risk-reduced) nicotine products and their uses” is supporting an initiative by French organization SOVAPE. Last January, the EU Commission delayed a decision on whether to impose the infamous proposed EU-wide tax on vaping products until 2019, as until now they did not gather enough data to justify the move.
