Smoking in United States of America

In the United States of America, smoking is allowed but tobacco products should follow some regulations. Under these regulations, health warnings on tobacco packaging including cigarettes are mandatory, the minimum legal age for their sales is 21 years, and there are no federal legal restrictions on smoking in public places. While tobacco advertising is regulated, not all forms of their advertising are banned. An excise tax of 32.16% with a total taxation rate of 37.36% is applied on cigarettes. Cigarettes can legally be sold with authorised documents. They may also be purchased through vending machines as well as through online channels. Importing cigarettes for trade is allowed with an appropriate import license. Despite these control measures, prevalence data show that smoking remains an important public health issue in the United States. There were 39.8 million current smokers in the country in 2024. This represents an overall adult smoking prevalence of 14.1%, with higher prevalence among men (17.1%) than among women (11.1%). In comparison, the overall current smoking prevalence was 12.3% in 2022. The adult daily smoking prevalence was recorded to be 10.01% in 2020. Smoking-related mortality also remains significant in the country. In 2021, smoking resulted in 360,370 deaths, including 216,986 male deaths and 143,383 female deaths. This shows that smoking accounted for 10.38% of all deaths in the United States in 2021, with a higher rate among men (11.9%) than among women (8.7%).

E-cigarettes with cigarette-like nicotine delivery reduce exposure to carcinogen

[...] “We found that e-cigarettes that delivered a similar amount of nicotine as traditional, combustible cigarettes, helped reduce smoking and exposure to a harmful carcinogen,” said Jonathan Foulds, a researcher at Penn State Cancer Institute [...]

Apparently Vaping Melatonin Is A Thing People Do Now

Melatonin doesn’t just come in supplement form — it’s actually a hormone that your body naturally produces to help regulate your sleep-wake cycle, says Dr. Vikki Petersen, CCN, a certified functional medicine practitioner, clinical nutritionist, [...] Lately, people have been turning to vapes for their dose of melatonin. Vapes, aka a sort of pen or e-cigarette you inhale from, are commonly used to inhale nicotine, weed, or flavored vapor to get the desired effect without actually smoking the substance, says Dr. Brian Koo, MD, a sleep medicine specialist [...]

Smoke-free Worksite Laws Curbing Vaping

A new observational study from researchers at the Yale School of Public Health suggests smoke-free worksite laws may yield reductions, not only in conventional cigarette use, but in the use of electronic nicotine delivery systems as well.

The researchers also found that adding vaping restrictions to these laws did not lead to further reductions in use of electronic nicotine delivery systems. Indeed, such restrictions appeared to reduce smoke-free worksite laws’ effects on conventional cigarette use.

Nicotine Volumes Down for End of March

Nicotine volume was down 2.8% year-over-year for the two weeks ending on March 27, according to a report from Goldman Sachs Managing Director Bonnie Herzog. The negative volumes are expected to continue, the New York-based investment firm said.

“We expect volumes to turn more negative once we start to lap some of the more pronounced effects of COVID (i.e., pantry-loading) from last year,” Herzog said.

How High Are Vapor Taxes in Your State?

Several states are considering introducing or increasing taxes on vapor products to make up declining tax revenue from traditional tobacco products or to fill budget holes in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. However, lawmakers should approach the issue carefully because flawed excise tax design on vapor products could drive consumers back to more harmful combustible products like cigarettes. Since vaping entered the market in the mid-2000s, it has grown into a well-established product category and a viable alternative to smokers. So far, 28 states and the District of Columbia have imposed an excise tax on vaping products. [...]

Alabama to Set Age Limit to Purchase E-Cigarettes at 21

The Alabama House has just passed a bill that would ban the sales of e-cigarettes and vaping products to people under 21. “There are certainly other changes and reforms that have been recommended that we strongly support, however this bill is a starting point which will result in greater accountability for manufacturers and retailers,” said state Rep. Barbara Drummond, D-Mobile, the main sponsor of the bill, HB273. “The simple truth is that these products are dangerous, highly addictive, and they are killing our young people.”

Vape sellers are using popular music videos to promote e-cigarettes to young people – and it’s working

Research that my colleagues and I recently conducted demonstrates that electronic cigarette product placement in music videos is associated with vaping among minors.

The Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement of 1998 prohibits product placement for cigarettes and chew tobacco in television, music videos and motion pictures, but those restrictions do not apply to electronic cigarettes. In a recent study, we found that participants exposed to any electronic cigarette product placement or imagery in music videos were more likely to have used an electronic cigarette in the past month compared to participants with no exposure.

MNT investigates: How lung cancer stigma holds back research and treatment

The American Cancer Society estimate that about 235,760 people in the U.S. will receive a new diagnosis of lung cancer in 2021. Around 131,880 people in the country will die from the condition this year alone.

Lung cancer can affect mental well-being in addition to physical health. The condition is widely stigmatized due to its association with smoking. This only adds to the challenges that people with lung cancer face.

“Lung cancer is the one type of cancer that people tend to be blamed for because of a lifestyle choice or behavior that they made,” Dr. Lisa Carter-Harris, Ph.D., APRN, ANP-C, FAAN, told Medical News Today.
