Malaysia’s vape ban plan leaves 1.4 million users in regulatory limbo
In Malaysia, vaping has shifted underground, becoming discreet and less openly available. Batrisyia notes the disappearance of prominent displays and online sales. Vapes are now sold quietly in some shops. The discreet pen-like devices offer a simple, odorless experience. In Pontian, Malaysia, where Batrisyia resides, the appeal of discretion has grown due to the underground nature of the trade.

That Vape in Your Bag Could Be a Problem on Your Next Mexico Cruise
Mexico has implemented a ban on vapes and e-cigarettes, including disposable and refillable devices, due to legal reforms. Travelers risk confiscation, fines, and even detainment if caught with vaping devices upon entering the country. While most cruise lines allow vaping onboard, bringing devices ashore in Mexico may lead to severe consequences. It's advised to leave vapes on the ship or avoid bringing them to Mexico altogether to avoid legal issues and penalties. Enforcement of the ban is increasing, making it a risky endeavor for travelers.

New York Gov. Hochul’s nicotine pouch tax would be bad for public health
Gov. Hochul's $260 billion budget includes a new tax on nicotine pouches to match cigarette prices, raising $18 million initially and $44 million later. While meant to improve public health, pouches don't contain tobacco or produce smoke. They offer a safer alternative as proven by the FDA approval. However, taxing them heavily may deter smokers from switching, consequently boosting cigarette sales. Existing tobacco tax revenue could be better used to enforce compliance and prevention programs instead of introducing new taxes.

Indonesian Health Groups Push to Regulate Vape Packaging
Indonesian health groups urge the Ministry of Health to require graphic health warnings and plain packaging for e-cigarettes due to growing youth use and lack of regulation. They warn that colorful packaging and lax oversight raise the risk of addiction and exposure to harmful substances among adolescents, advocating for stricter enforcement and a social media advertising ban. With high teen smoking rates, the groups push for swift regulatory measures to reduce youth consumption and improve oversight.

E-cigarettes pose health risks, warns France’s health watchdog
A report by the French public health watchdog warns against using e-cigarettes casually due to potential health risks like cancer and cardiovascular issues. While they can aid in quitting traditional cigarettes, the ultimate goal should be to quit vapes too. Anses advises against raising taxes on e-cigarettes to prevent users turning to homemade products with harmful ingredients. The agency calls for more regulations, banning risky ingredients, and discouraging vaping among non-smokers and youth. Health professionals are urged not to recommend vapes as smoking cessation aids.

The Updated Meta-Analysis of E-Cigs & Health Outcomes: Still Critically Flawed
Two years ago, tobacco control activist Stanton Glantz and his colleagues published a meta-analysis on e-cigarettes and health outcomes. They systematically reviewed existing studies, grouped them by disease categories such as cardiovascular disease and COPD, and calculated pooled effects for each outcome. However, a meta-analysis is only as reliable as the studies it includes. Most of the underlying papers were based on population survey data that showed correlations between e-cigarette use and nearly every measured health condition. Such correlations are often methodologically weak, as they are prone to confounding and do not establish causation.

Consumers urge Sweden to veto EU Tobacco Tax
Nine organizations representing users of safer nicotine products urge the Swedish Government to veto EU's proposal for significant tax hikes on vapes and nicotine pouches. Seen as a threat to the Swedish Model, the plan could harm public health by treating safer nicotine options like cigarettes. Sweden's success in low smoking rates is attributed to these products, making the directive a direct attack. The suggested minimum excise duty is deemed unreasonably high, potentially pushing consumers back to smoking. The plea calls for differentiation in taxes based on risk and protection of national sovereignty to maintain successful harm reduction strategies. EU countries will discuss the proposal this week.
