Researchers have found that nicotine in cigarettes cancels out the sleepiness caused by alcohol, basically allowing people to keep drinking … and smoking. The two vices feed off of each other.
It takes time for your brain to stop associating the two activities. So when you decide to quit smoking, it will help to take a break from drinking, too, at least during the first few weeks. If not, your brain will send out a signal prompting you to reach for a cigarette every time you have a drink. Try chewing gum or having a sugar-free candy instead.

E-cigarettes should come with health warnings, according to a Scottish heart expert who is researching the devices. Pregnant women are more likely to smoke if they live in areas with lots of shops selling cigarettes, a study has suggested.
Edinburgh University researchers looked at maternity records in tandem with information on all Scottish tobacco outlets.
They said their study is the first to reveal the links between tobacco availability and smoking in pregnancy.
Previous research suggested tobacco was more available in deprived areas.
The research team said "restricting the supply of tobacco could help tackle health inequalities".

People with type 1 diabetes who use marijuana may double their risk of developing a life-threatening complication, a new study suggests.
Called diabetic ketoacidosis, or DKA, the condition occurs when there is not enough insulin to break down sugar in the body, so the body burns fat for fuel instead. This triggers a build-up of chemicals known as ketones, which make blood more acidic and can lead to coma or death.

Smoking could be banned in town and city centres if Mark Drakeford succeeds in becoming the next first minister.
The Welsh Labour leadership candidate has included the plan in his manifesto for the contest.
Mr Drakeford also wants to ban smoking in outdoor areas of cafes and restaurants.
Currently smoking is banned in indoor public places. It is also banned in cars where children are present. The ban is set to be extended to the grounds of schools and hospitals next summer.

The Excise Department has warned visitors to Thailand about the fines for bringing electronic cigarettes and related substances or equipment into the country for personal use or sale. Department director-general Patchara Anuntasilpa said on Thursday the Commerce Ministry had enforced a ban on e-cigarettes due to health concerns raised by the Public Health Ministry.
Anyone possessing for personal use "cigalikes", which look like conventional cigarettes and can be used for a number of times, will be fined 6,800 baht per carton [...]

British American Tobacco and Imperial Brands have had £8.6bn wiped off their stock market value as US regulators prepare to crack down on the sale of flavoured e-cigarettes and menthol cigarettes.
Shares in BAT, the sixth-biggest company in the FTSE 100 and maker of brands including Lucky Strike, Dunhill, Rothmans and Benson & Hedges, fell by 10.6%, sending its market value plummeting from £76bn at close on Friday to £68bn at the end of trading on Monday.

World Health Organization (WHO) Representative to the Philippines Dr. Gundo Weiler said that it is still not clear if electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are an effective smoking cessation aid. “There are also claims that e-cigarettes lead to reduction in smoking. It is not so clear at this point whether indeed along the line people will have less consumption of tobacco because of those products,” said Weiler.
