Smoking cigarettes negatively impacts your health, with heart and respiratory diseases, and several cancers, the most well-known risks. Few realize that smoking also has an impact on your bones, joints and connective tissue, said Dr. Adam Burzynski, an orthopedic surgeon with Excelsior Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. Studies suggest that smoking cigarettes changes the way that the brain processes sensory stimuli and perceives pain. [...]
First, banning e-cigarettes and new tobacco products could be the initial step towards achieving the long-term goal of a smoke-free Hong Kong. Traditional cigarettes have been imported and consumed for decades, and a sudden outright ban would be impractical. But banning vaping products, which are still relatively new to the market, would prevent their gaining popularity. Simultaneously, the government should regularly review its regulations on traditional cigarettes, such as tax and import laws, [...]
Researchers have found that nicotine in cigarettes cancels out the sleepiness caused by alcohol, basically allowing people to keep drinking … and smoking. The two vices feed off of each other.
It takes time for your brain to stop associating the two activities. So when you decide to quit smoking, it will help to take a break from drinking, too, at least during the first few weeks. If not, your brain will send out a signal prompting you to reach for a cigarette every time you have a drink. Try chewing gum or having a sugar-free candy instead.
E-cigarettes should come with health warnings, according to a Scottish heart expert who is researching the devices. Jacob George, professor of cardiovascular medicine and therapeutics at Dundee university, also criticised public health bodies for what he calls “mixed messaging” over the use of the devices. George is compiling the results of a two-year study, funded by a British Heart Foundation grant, into the effects of swapping cigarettes for vapes on the vascular system and lungs [...]
Pregnant women are more likely to smoke if they live in areas with lots of shops selling cigarettes, a study has suggested.
Edinburgh University researchers looked at maternity records in tandem with information on all Scottish tobacco outlets.
They said their study is the first to reveal the links between tobacco availability and smoking in pregnancy.
Previous research suggested tobacco was more available in deprived areas.
The research team said "restricting the supply of tobacco could help tackle health inequalities".
Polosa and his team have conducted numerous important clinical trials on the safety and efficacy of e-cigarettes, in addition to studies on schizophrenia, smoking and the transition from smoking to e-cigarettes. Uttarakhand high court (HC) on Monday directed the central government to “consider within a period of six months whether a part of Section 7 of The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products [...] should be brought into force or not.” Section 7 (5) of the Act stipulates that “no person shall directly or indirectly, produce, supply or distribute cigarettes or any other tobacco products unless every package of cigarettes produced, supplied or distributed by him indicates on its label, [...]
The number of cigarette smokers in the US hit the lowest levels public health officials have ever seen, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced [...]. But even though e-cigarette companies tout vapes as alternatives to cigarettes, this dramatic drop in smoking isn’t necessarily because of a rise in vaping. Only about 14 percent of Americans over the age of 18 smoked cigarettes last year, down from more than 40 percent in 1965, the CDC reports. The record low number of cigarette smokers is good news [...]
Vaping, i.e smoking nicotine-infused e-cigarettes that come in a variety of flavours, has exploded in popularity in America in recent years, most noticeably among millennials. This is partly due to the fact that, despite it still being highly addictive, scientists agree vaping is technically better for you than smoking regular cigarettes. My recently converted friends explain it’s also fun being able to choose your own vape adventure – mango, strawberry, mint, peanut butter, crème brule, cucumber, you name it!
People with type 1 diabetes who use marijuana may double their risk of developing a life-threatening complication, a new study suggests.
Called diabetic ketoacidosis, or DKA, the condition occurs when there is not enough insulin to break down sugar in the body, so the body burns fat for fuel instead. This triggers a build-up of chemicals known as ketones, which make blood more acidic and can lead to coma or death.

Mr Drakeford also wants to ban smoking in outdoor areas of cafes and restaurants.
Currently smoking is banned in indoor public places. It is also banned in cars where children are present. The ban is set to be extended to the grounds of schools and hospitals next summer.

Maneesh Kasera was a smoker for 28 years. Two years ago, he made the first attempt to quit smoking. He tried nicotine gums — a kind of chewing gum that delivers nicotine to the body — for a day or two but nothing could wean him away from cigarettes. Finally, he tried e-cigarettes. [...] Like Kasera, many Indians are vaping — the term for using e-cigarettes. But the recent advisory from the Indian government to ban e-cigarettes has thrown vapers or e-cigarette smokers into a tizzy.
E-cigarettes are a booming industry in China. Most of these e-cigarettes are exported to countries in North America and Europe. Its invention is also deeply connected with China. [...]
World Health Organization (WHO) Representative to the Philippines Dr. Gundo Weiler said that it is still not clear if electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are an effective smoking cessation aid. “There are also claims that e-cigarettes lead to reduction in smoking. It is not so clear at this point whether indeed along the line people will have less consumption of tobacco because of those products,” said Weiler.
“They might stop, but they may also start using that, and then later switch to tobacco use. There are a lot of factors,” he added.
I need to declare my position: I am not ready to subscribe to a social policy that justifies legalising cannabis by citing ‘harm reduction’. Much as I esteem the hard work that Hon. Julia Farrugia Portelli is doing, the arguments she made during an event organised by The President’s Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society, as reported by the media, are of concern. [...]
