Time to reform Australia’s failed policy on smoking and vaping
Australia’s smoking and vaping policy has created a system where cigarettes remain easy to buy, while safer alternatives are treated as a problem to be contained. That contradiction has weakened trust, fuelled illicit supply and made switching harder for adults who smoke. Reform should start with a simple principle: regulate nicotine products according to risk, not political discomfort. A policy that keeps the most harmful product as the easiest option is not protecting public health.
11.00% of the adult population are current smokers. There are approximately 2.4 million current smokers in Australia 12.90% of men are current smokers but only 9.30% of women.
