Vapes to be used in community pharmacy smoking cessation pilot
Community pharmacies in Medway, Kent, are participating in a smoking cessation pilot using e-cigarettes as quit aids. Seven pharmacies offer a locally commissioned service with vouchers for starter kits and vape liquids. The pilot aims to support England's goal of becoming smoke-free by 2030, targeting a 50% yearly quit attempt rate. Results from a Cochrane review indicate e-cigarettes, varenicline, and cytisine are effective in long-term smoking cessation. Emphasizing the importance of addressing health and economic disparities, the initiative involves community pharmacies to accelerate smoking reduction. Varenicline will be reintroduced for NHS patients following a safety recall in 2021.
