The social impacts of prohibition #GFN26
Prohibition does not remove nicotine use — it reshapes where and how it happens. When safer products are banned or heavily restricted, consumers may be pushed towards illicit markets, unsafe supply chains and continued cigarette smoking. The social costs can include criminalisation, stigma, enforcement burdens and widening inequalities. Harm reduction offers a more practical path: reduce risk, preserve access to safer alternatives and regulate behaviour that already exists.
