The Difference Between Quitting Nicotine and Ending Smoking
Quitting nicotine and quitting smoking are not the same public health outcome. A person may continue using nicotine while dramatically reducing exposure to the toxicants created by burning tobacco. That distinction matters because insisting on nicotine abstinence as the only acceptable goal can overlook meaningful reductions in disease risk. For many smokers, the first priority should be leaving combustion behind — even if nicotine use does not end immediately.
