Smoking, Vaping Tied to Similar Unhealthy Changes in DNA

New research indicates that switching from smoking to vaping doesn't prevent harmful genetic changes. A study comparing young adult vapers and smokers found similar cancer-related gene alterations in both groups, raising concerns for public health and tobacco regulations. The study discovered differential DNA methylation regions in both vapers and smokers, including changes in a gene linked to lung cancer. Researchers emphasize that e-cigarettes are not as safe as believed, with potential disease development risks. The study, led by Stella Tommasi from the University of Southern California, sheds light on the need for further research into the impact of vaping on health.
