Latest developments in the use of e-cigarettes by people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders who smoke: a scoping review
Smoking is a major but often neglected driver of poor health among people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. A 2026 scoping review found preliminary evidence that e-cigarette interventions may be feasible and acceptable in this group, with signs of smoking reduction, short-term abstinence and reduced exposure to tobacco-related carcinogens. The evidence is still limited, with only a small number of studies and important questions about long-term support and generalisability. But for a population where conventional cessation often performs poorly, harm reduction deserves serious clinical attention.
