'It's great for public health' - record low rate of smokers in York
SMOKING rates in York reached a record low last year, new figures show. And a doctor in the city said this is a great sign for public health in the area. Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show 8.7 per cent of adults in York smoked in 2022 – down from 9.2 per cent the year before and the lowest rate since records began for the area in 2012. It follows trends across England, where the national rate of smokers reached 12.7 per cent, the lowest level on record.
12.90% of the adult population are current smokers. There are approximately 7.2 million current smokers in United Kingdom 14.60% of men are current smokers but only 11.20% of women.
