In defense of nicotine
Nicotine is usually discussed only as a problem, which leaves the public with a distorted picture of why people use it. Its potential upsides do not make it harmless or suitable for everyone, but they do help explain demand beyond addiction alone. The main public health failure comes from confusing nicotine with smoking. A more honest debate would separate the substance from combustion, acknowledge both risks and benefits, and focus policy on reducing the harms that actually kill.
