Generational Tobacco Ban

Generational Tobacco Ban
Generational tobacco bans are gaining momentum worldwide, with the UK and Maldives introducing legislation to permanently restrict tobacco sales to people born after specific dates. Similar measures are under consideration in Canada, Ireland, Türkiye and Vietnam, while New Zealand previously repealed its proposed ban.
Although these policies aim to prevent future smoking, their implications for tobacco harm reduction deserve attention. Restrictions that extend to smoke-free nicotine alternatives could limit opportunities to move away from combustible tobacco. Effective tobacco control should combine youth protection with evidence-based regulation that recognises differences in product risk.
