From secondhand smoke to secondhand quitting
The harms of smoking do not stop with the smoker — and neither do the benefits of quitting. When adults move away from combustible cigarettes, families and communities can see reduced exposure to smoke, odour and tobacco-related risks. Harm reduction extends that logic by supporting realistic routes away from smoking, including lower-risk smoke-free alternatives. Public health should recognise not only secondhand smoke, but the wider benefits of secondhand quitting.
14.10% of the adult population are current smokers. There are approximately 39.8 million current smokers in United States 17.10% of men are current smokers but only 11.10% of women.
