The FDA’s tobacco centre reworking its product review process matters because the current system has struggled to keep pace with the market it is supposed to regulate. Slow, uncertain pathways can leave responsible products waiting while cigarettes remain widely available and unapproved alternatives continue to circulate. A better review model should be faster without becoming weaker: clear standards, transparent decisions and evidence assessed according to relative risk. The goal should be a legal market where safer nicotine products are reviewed in time to help smokers move away from combustion.
