Flavored Vapes Can Save Lives

Last week, the Food and Drug Administration quietly released the results of its annual youth tobacco survey, revealing a significant public health achievement. The data showed a dramatic decline in vaping among high school students, dropping from nearly 30 percent in 2019 to just 5.2 percent in 2025. Even more striking, only 1.4 percent of high school students reported smoking, meaning just over one percent still use traditional cigarettes. Despite this remarkable progress, which could be considered one of the greatest successes in public health history, organizations such as the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the American Lung Association, and the FDA are focusing their attention on the debate over whether flavored e-cigarettes should be permitted, rather than celebrating the overall decline in youth tobacco use.
