The European Parliament’s rejection of steep nicotine tax proposals shows growing resistance to treating all nicotine products like cigarettes. Higher taxes on vapes, pouches and other smoke-free alternatives could weaken the incentive for smokers to switch away from combustible tobacco. Tax policy should reflect relative risk, not punish lower-risk choices. If Europe wants fewer smokers, it should not make safer alternatives less affordable.
9.90% of the adult population are current smokers. There are approximately 867,000 current smokers in Sweden 11.70% of men are current smokers but only 8.10% of women.
