A political economy of the tobacco supply chain in an Eastern Mediterranean country: The case of Lebanon

This paper discusses the lack of research on tobacco supply chains and industry practices, focusing on Lebanon's tobacco market. It reveals issues of monopolization, ineffective policies, and unsustainable cultivation practices. Recommendations include dissolving the state-owned monopoly, implementing specific taxes, enforcing antitrust laws, and reforming cultivation practices for a more competitive and sustainable market.


34.00% of the adult population are current smokers. There are approximately 1.7 million current smokers in Lebanon 43.10% of men are current smokers but only 25.70% of women.
