With the technology disruption brought by the development of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) or e-cigarettes, nicotine has ceased to be the problem but has become part of the solution to the persistent global smoking scourge, a vaping advocate claims.

“Nicotine is not the problem. It is a very big part of the solution,” said Andy Morrison, a former smoker and trustee for the New Nicotine Alliance (NNA), during the 5th Global Forum on Nicotine (GFN) held in Warsaw, [...]

A recent report on the topic suggests the push for e-cigarettes is coming from tobacco companies, who are eager to lure another demographic into their sales market. On this reasoning, vaping is presented as being a “gateway” activity. It supposedly leads or prompts consumers towards conventional smoking products.

But Dr Attila Danko says this is not the case.

“If it was true that e-cigarettes were a massive gateway to children becoming addicted, I wouldn’t be on the side of legalising it,” says Danko.

It sounds so well-intentioned: Preventing “harm” to consumers by erring on the side of scientific “doubt.” But the practical effect of the so-called “precautionary” principle is often just the opposite: denying consumers ready access to demonstrably beneficial goods and services. A good example is the rapidly expanding “vaping” industry. Billed as a safer and cleaner alternative to tobacco, vaping features an odorless and colorless liquid heated with a battery-powered unit [...]

E-cigarettes are an ineffective tool for smoking cessation, according to new research that found 90 percent of people who used electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and traditional cigarettes were still smoking a year later.

E-cigarettes are often touted as a safer alternative to combustible cigarettes, which continue to kill over 480,000 people per year and cause other illnesses affecting more than 16 million Americans.

Last week, the new Ontario government announced that it was putting the province’s new vaping rules on hold. Those rules would have placed severe restrictions on e-cigarettes, essentially treating them exactly the same as combustible tobacco cigarettes.

In 2015, Calgary introduced similar restrictions, and a report the following year declared the bylaw to be a success. That conclusion was based largely on survey results indicating awareness of and compliance with the bylaw. [...]

The Marlboro Man was one of the most iconic and impactful symbols of the past century. Tough, hardworking, self-sufficient and an advert for one of the biggest causes of death in the UK – cigarettes – he is both reviled and revered by all those who remember Phillip Morris International’s (PMI) advertising sensation.

Today, the reality about the Marlboro Man is certainly darker; at least four of the actors who played him have died of smoking-related diseases, [...]

Most parents asked for views on e-cigarettes want them banned outright rather than legalized with warnings and restrictions.

Eighty-two percent of 3,374 parents who responded to a survey called for the ban in the wake of a proposal last month to amend the current Smoking (Public Health) Ordinance to regulate e-cigarettes and herbal smoking products.

Suggestions now include prohibitions on sales to youngsters, packages with health warnings and indications of harmful substances, [...]

A health group has called on the government to totally ban the use of electronic cigarettes. “We call on President Duterte to impose a ban on selling, distribution and use of e-cigarettes, vapes, and all products necessary and incidental to the use thereof, just as he had done in Davao City,” said Mary Ann Fernandez-Mendoza, president of HealthJustice group. “The purpose is to protect the lives and health of the people, especially the youth, who would otherwise fall prey to these deadly commodities,” [...]

Given that tobacco smoking is such a breathtakingly serious cause of disease and death, there could be few more-deserving causes than one devoted, as the NNA is, to encouraging combustible cigarette smokers to switch to less-risky products. And yet I happen to know that the NNA is financially impoverished. [...]

Altria‘s (NYSE:MO) stock is down almost 20% this year, and a few factors may be responsible for this. The company missed consensus estimates on revenues in the fourth quarter of 2017, which fell 3% for the year, driven by a fall in cigarette volumes. While the company managed to beat expectations in the first quarter of 2018, the stock fell post the earnings release due to a big decline in the cigarette volume, which came in at 7%, [...]

Locations where cannabis will and won’t be allowed once it’s legal Oct. 17 were determined at Edmonton City Hall on Tuesday. During the debate, councillors took a more extensive — and more restrictive — view of the issue and decided to include tobacco smoke in the cannabis consumption bylaw. [...] The goal is to make cannabis restrictions and cigarette restrictions exactly the same because enforcement officials have said it will be difficult differentiating between the two at first glance.

It’s been more than 50 years since the surgeon general issued a report linking smoking to health hazards such as lung cancer and heart disease. Yet many still blame Big Tobacco for continued cigarette consumption despite the industry’s efforts to inform consumers of associated health risks. Even worse, tobacco harm reduction products (THP) and other industry methods to mitigate health dangers are being attacked and undermined by anti-smoking zealots.

THE majority of people know that smoking poses significant health risks like heart disease and mouth and lung cancer, but many remain completely unaware of the other dangerous impacts.

There are 23 health conditions now linked to smoking but new research by the Cancer Council Victoria made the disturbing discovery that a significant number of Australians could name fewer than half those conditions.

Britain is the world leader in vaping. More people use ecigarettes in the UK than in any other European country. It’s more officially encouraged than in the United States and more socially acceptable than in Australia, where it’s still banned. There is a thriving sector here of vape manufacturers, retailers, exporters, even researchers; there are 1,700 independent vape shops on Britain’s streets. It’s an entrepreneurial phenomenon and a billion-pound industry.

Investors are lining up behind Juul Labs Inc., a startup that makes electronic cigarettes popular with young people. But as vaporizers have taken off, the industry is under pressure from regulators and competitors.

Juul said in a U.S. securities filing posted Tuesday that it raised $650 million out of a funding round expected to reach $1.2 billion. The deal is set to value the business at about $15 billion, Bloomberg reported last month. [...]

Cigar and pipe tobacco companies will not have to add health warning statements to their products on August 10, a federal judge has ruled.

U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta said Thursday that the May 2016 Food and Drug Administration rule will be delayed until 60 days after the D.C. Circuit rules on an appeal from cigar and pipe retailer associations. The FDA rule at issue will require cigar and pipe tobacco products to display one of six large warning statements, [...]

Both Easyjet and Ryanair allow passengers to carry their vapes in their hand luggage but have a strict no smoking policy which applies to vaping.

Unlike cigarette second-hand smoke, the NHS website states "e-cigs release negligible amounts of nicotine into the atmosphere and the limited evidence available suggests that any risk from passive vaping to bystanders is small relative to tobacco cigarettes."

Last week, global anti-smoking efforts made substantial progress. Australia won a landmark victory in a major trade dispute over its plain packaging for cigarettes, with the World Trade Organization panel rejecting complaints concerning its tobacco packaging law. Additionally, the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) announced that the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products would enter into force, representing a milestone [...]
