New research suggests that increasing the cost of a pack of cigarettes by 50 per cent, could in fact save hundreds of millions of lives as well as help get people out of the poverty trap. Prof Prabhat Jha, from the University of Toronto and St Michael's Hospital, said: "Our study debunks the current narrative that higher cigarette prices would negatively impact the poorest among us.
