A study on “Effective Anti-Smoking Policies” released at the beginning of November from the “We Are Innovation” Foundation found that out of the 59 countries analysed, ten ban vaping products, five ban heated tobacco products, eleven ban nicotine pouches and twenty-seven ban snus. According to the research, the evidence from (…)

New evidence provides the clearest signal yet that the Food and Drug Administration is opposed categorically to authorizing non-tobacco flavored vapes—something indicated by reams of rejections under its premarket tobacco product applications (PMTA) process, but never explicitly stated.

Two memos reviewed by Filter indicate that the office of Brian King, director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products (CTP), intervened to push back against the CTP Office of Science’s recommendation to authorize menthol vaping products for the first time. [...]

Associate Health Minister Dr Ayesha Verrall has done well not to get side-tracked by constant and unrelated attacks on vaping by MPs debating the smokefree amendment bill in Parliament, according to Kiwi Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR) advocates.

AMA members are concerned about the harmful effects of vaping, which include seizures, nicotine poisoning and brain development issues.

The AMA Federal Council has acted on the concern of members regarding the health risks of vaping.

At its meeting earlier this month Federal Council passed a motion demanding stronger regulatory measures to curb the proliferation of recreational non-nicotine vaping products, which include but are not limited to: implementing similar regulation to tobacco products, such as health warnings, better labelling, plain packaging and tobacco licences

Despite California's success in reducing tobacco use, a new study published today in JAMA Network Open demonstrates the continued and significant burden tobacco inflicts on people with cancer. "This is almost double what was previously estimated in a study that looked at 2014 data," said California Cancer Registry researcher Frances Maguire, who is the lead author of the study.

The smoking ban in Austrian restaurants, which has been in force since November 1st, 2019, will be extended to "additional outdoor public places" in 2023, according to plans by Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens).

A new amendment to the Tobacco and Non-Smoker Protection Act is being worked on, according to the newspaper Der Standard. Among other things, it provides for an Austria-wide extension of the smoking ban to "additional outdoor public places" such as "children's playgrounds and recreational areas for children and young people".

Around 3,000 cigarette products are on the U.S. market and readily available in every convenience store, gas station and supermarket. The cigarette trade serves more than 30 million American adults with products that cause more deaths than HIV, alcohol, guns, road accidents and illicit drugs combined. FDA regulates these products, but (…)

It’s blatant, and some think shameful, the degree to which political interference and anti-vaping ideology have hijacked the FDA’s approval process for nicotine vaping products. [...] Joining us today is Tony Abboud, the Executive Director at the Vapor Technology Association. We take a deep dive into the problems at FDA and CTP. We discuss the industry’s court challenge to California’s flavor ban and its economic impact. And we learn about VTA’s recommendation for dealing with the flood of disposables on the market.

In recent years, a bunch of studies have reported correlations between nicotine vaping and various smoking-related diseases, seemingly undermining the case for e-cigarettes as a harm-reducing alternative to combusted tobacco. But as a new analysis in the journal Internal and Emergency Medicine notes, those studies paid no attention to the question of whether the diseases were diagnosed before or after the subjects began vaping—a glaring omission when you are trying to figure out whether the associations indicate cause-and-effect relationships.

Nine years ago I walked through the streets of London towards the impressive Royal Society building to attend the inaugural E-Cigarette Summit. I went to a conference where the debate was split, where optimism based on basic science was confounded by a dearth of studies, and where it looked like the UK faced an imminent ban on vaping devices.

How things have changed. After ten years in which vaping has been banned or severely restricted in much of the world, the UK has become the beacon of hope for tobacco harm reduction in the form of vaping. Much of that is due to the E-Cigarette Summit, which brings leading researchers, policymakers and more to share the latest research and views.

Most Brits would back a ban on the sale of cigarettes or tobacco to anyone born after 2008, a YouGov survey has revealed.

Fifty-seven per cent of British people would support the legislation to bar younger generations from purchasing smoking-related products, while 34 per cent said they would 'strongly' support it.

The results come after New Zealand introduced this very legislation for people born on and after 2009, meaning that they will never legally be able to smoke.

We have decades of research on the health effects of drinking. But research on cannabis is still evolving and the public health consequences of its commercialized use — in new products and doses — will take years to understand.

From a medical standpoint, there is no level of alcohol use that is completely safe, as studies have shown harms even with light drinking.

If my patient drinks daily, I advise that they reduce their drinking. If they can’t reduce their drinking despite trying, I offer treatments to help cut back or stop: [...]

At the end of November, there has been some commotion around leaked documents related to the EU's Tobacco Tax Directive (TED), in which the European Commission not only sets out its preliminary plans for a tax increase on tobacco but also wants to introduce a common European tax on alternative, [...]

The Financial Times, which had managed to get its hands on a draft proposal from the EC, announced the news in late November. Following this news, rumours also quickly surfaced that both oral nicotine products, the nicotine non-tobacco-containing pouches, and snus, which are banned in the EU, but very popular in Sweden, would also be affected by the new tax, almost doubling their price.

The Surgeon General of the United States (SG) recently launched an initiative to reduce health misinformation. In an advisory, he wrote: ‘Health misinformation is a serious threat to public health. It can cause confusion, sow mistrust, harm people’s health, and undermine public health efforts. Limiting the spread of health misinformation is a moral and civic imperative.’

We agree and applaud the SG for addressing this important issue, which has garnered media attention primarily due to COVID. Questions related to risks of e-cigarettes constitute another area where there is widespread misinformation. [...]

It has long been clear that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is leery of approving nicotine vaping products in flavors other than tobacco because the agency worries that they appeal to teenagers. Two recently disclosed FDA memos not only confirm that impression; they indicate that the agency is determined to ban all other flavors, no matter how popular they are among former smokers and no matter what evidence a manufacturer presents in favor of a particular product.

New Zealand will phase in a near-total tobacco ban from next year.

Legislation passed by parliament on Tuesday means that anyone born after 2008 will never be able to buy cigarettes or tobacco products.

It will mean the number of people able to buy tobacco will shrink each year. By 2050, for example, 40-year-olds will be too young to buy cigarettes.

Health Minister Ayesha Verrall, who introduced the bill, said it was a step "towards a smoke-free future".

"Thousands of people will live longer, healthier lives and the health system will be NZ$5 billion (US$3.2 billion) better off from not needing to treat the illnesses caused by smoking," Dr Verrall said.

In a new paper, a group of leading tobacco control experts urge the US surgeon general and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to correct widespread misinformation surrounding nicotine vapes.

The article, which appears in Addiction, an esteemed peer-reviewed scientific journal, notes that the CDC does not have a clear definition of an e-cigarette. It suggests that the center adopt “e-cigarettes are electronic devices that transform a liquid containing nicotine into aerosol that is inhaled via a mouthpiece.”

A seller of flavored liquid used in e-cigarettes has lost its appeal of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's refusal to approve its products, the latest in a series of court orders upholding the agency's tightening regulation of the e-cigarette industry.

A unanimous panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday found that the FDA had acted within its authority as it tackled the "daunting task of ensuring that another generation of Americans does not become addicted to nicotine and tobacco products," rebuffing an appeal from Virginia-based Avail Vapor LLC.
