When Dr Sandro Demaio pulled out his phone to compose a tweet about secondhand vaping, he wasn’t expecting to get accused of spreading misinformation.

“We’re seeing a threefold increase in vape toxicity notifications from secondhand vape exposure,” he wrote. “Kids as young as 12 months inhaling vapour from others around them. Including in cars, and even public spaces. Becoming poisoned from the highly addictive and toxic nicotine.”

Hispanic and Latino young men with higher levels of education who were born in the United States and speak mostly English at home are more likely to use e-cigarettes, according to a Rutgers researcher.

In a study, published in American Journal of Medicine Open, researchers examined current and former use of e-cigarettes among individuals from six distinct Hispanic and Latino backgrounds.

“ENDS products represent a potential disruptive innovation to traditional tobacco use, with adolescents and young adults experimenting with e-cigarettes,” said Ayana April-Sanders, an instructor at the Rutgers School of Public Health and lead author of the study. [...]

From updated legislation on nicotine products to the emergence of two smoke-free generations in Sweden, the year in snus 2022 has been an eventful one, says Patrik Strömer, Secretary General of the Association of Swedish Snus Manufacturers.

How would you sum up the year in snus 2022?

I’d have to say it’s been the best one in a long time! Sweden now has TWO smoke-free generations: the youngest age group up to 29 years old, as well as those aged 30–44. According to the latest statistics, only 5.6 percent of Swedes are daily smokers – the lowest smoking rate in the entire EU and about half that of the second-best country!

On December 19, the Reagan-Udall Foundation, an independent nonprofit tasked by Congress to help modernize the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), released a commissioned report on the agency’s Center for Tobacco Products (CTP). The expert panel—which mainly consisted of former agency higher-ups—concluded that the CTP has to pivot from “a reactive mode to proactive mode.” It identified the lack of a coherent plan at the center charged with authorizing or rejecting vaping products, and called for transparency at an agency long characterized by its absence. Summing up, the third edition of the Global State of Tobacco Harm Reduction outlines a clear framework on electronic nicotine delivery systems scenario: although there are now over 100 million people using  these products worldwide, tobacco-related deaths still exceed 8 million a year and the strenuous opposition from governments and several public health authorities appears to be charting an uphill battle for smokers who can’t quit.

Several African countries have responded to calls from the continent’s and global health experts and scientists to embrace Harm Reduction Strategy in health care institutions — and Malawi needs to follow suit in order to minimize medical care spending. This was observed by Chimwemwe Ngoma — Malawi’s advocate for tobacco harm reduction — during the second Harm Reduction Exchange conference for African journalists.

The Dutch government has launched a consultation on legislation to ban nicotine pouches. The consultation ends on 16 January. The European Commission has already signalled that it would like an EU wide ban on nicotine pouches. If individual member states, such as the Netherlands, ban pouches, an EU wide ban becomes far more likely.

Nicotine pouches are becoming increasingly popular with people seeking safer alternatives to smoking. It is morally wrong to deny people who smoke access to products which are less harmful to their health.

The NL government’s rationale for the ban relies on the same tired old arguments we see used against vaping. The ban is based on ideology, not on sound science.

A recent study published in Addiction analyzed data gathered from 47 countries between 2015 and 2018, with the intention of measuring teen vaping rates worldwide. The research team found that approximately 1 in 12, or 8.6%, of adolescents reported (…)

As the year winds down, legislators are eagerly plotting various legislation they plan to introduce in the new year. Given the continued alarmism about an imaginary youth vaping epidemic, many will introduce bills that tax and/or ban the sales of vape products to adults. While addressing youth vaping is laudable, lawmakers remain ill-informed of the actual youth vaping numbers for their respective states. And they can’t even access that information because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continues to delay publishing the results from the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

Globally, almost a third of tobacco consumers use oral products. Smokeless tobacco (SLT) is generally safer than combustibles. But traditional forms popular in South Asia pack a deadly punch, leading to more than 570,000 annual deaths. Despite these products causing 88 percent of SLT-related mortality, the World Health Organization (WHO) and its allies continue to club them alongside much safer SLT options under the risk-blind “all tobacco is bad” paradigm. This funnels interventions into (...)

More than half of UK’s 23 airports now have complete bans on smoking and vaping in place for travellers once they get through security, a study has revealed.

Only 11 of these airports have a place for smokers to light up before getting their flight after their bags have been scanned.

And even vape users aren't spared as these restrictions extend to e-cigarettes too.

This means nicotine enthusiasts could be forced to go without for several hours prior to take-off - potentially longer if there’s a delay, in additions to the time spent in the air.

The UKVIA (UK Vaping Industry Association) commissioned a report into the economic impact of vaping in the UK. According to the report the number of vapers in the UK has increased from 2.7m in 2017 to 3.7m in 2021. As to the number of actual vaping shops – between 2017 and 2020 this has increased from 2,280 to around 3,650 – approximately a 61% increase. The study (…)

An independent panel of experts says its review of the US Food and Drug Administration’s tobacco program found numerous wide-ranging problems that hinder its ability to regulate the industry and reduce tobacco-related disease and death.

FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf requested the review in July, anticipating the complex issues that will come with an ever-growing number of tobacco products. The experts were asked to take a closer look at the agency’s regulatory process and agency operations, as well as how it handles application reviews, compliance and enforcement actions, and communication with stakeholders and the public. The panel did not review the FDA’s tobacco policy itself.

It's been six decades since the landmark surgeon general's report that shed definitive light on the deadly nature of cigarettes.

And while it would be easy to feel complacent, and rest on our laurels as a nation now proudly at the forefront of tobacco control … we should be anything but.

The tobacco industry has re-emerged with an addictive and dangerous new threat. It's now repeating the deadly playbook that so effectively led to thousands of lives ending early and enormous levels of pain and suffering.

The SA Health website makes false claims, exaggerates the risks and provides misleading information about vaping. It falsely claims that vaping has been linked to serious lung disease. No cases of serious lung disease have ever been linked to nicotine vaping. The outbreak of the lung condition EVALI in North America in 2019-20 was caused by vaping black-market cannabis oils adulterated with a cutting agent, Vitamin E Acetate. It also claims that (...)

As has been widely reported, new data published last week by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveals that the smoking rate for over 18s in the UK in 2021 declined to a record low of 13.3%. The ONS described the drop in smoking numbers since the previous year’s rate of 14.0% as statistically significant and concluded that vaping had played “a major role” in the reduction. This is great news at the end of a difficult year for many, but also (...)
