The American College of Cardiology (ACC) has published an Expert Consensus Decision Pathway to provide guidance to clinicians treating patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) who are also smokers. Authors of the pathway suggest that clinicians should ask all patients about smoking and tobacco use at every office visit, extending beyond cigarette smoking and asking about the use of cigars, hookah, smokeless tobacco, and electronic cigarettes. Tobacco Harm Reduction experts agree that the word ‘e-cigarette’ should be replaced with vape or vaporiser, in order to avoid that the product is associated with its deadly combustible counterpart. The NNA agrees, and whilst it suspects that replacing the word e-cigarette may take time, it urges us all to do so. “There’s no denying that the term e-cigarette leads many to an association with smoking, and this really is the issue here. We’re associating a far safer product with one that kills 7 million people a year,” said Charles Yates [...]

Nobody knows who first said, "To succeed, you first have to fail." But it's a phrase many smokers likely relate to. About half of all smokers try to quit each year, according to federal data. But only about 7 percent are successful.

"We've heard about people who say, 'That's it!' and they stop for good. But that's pretty rare," said tobacco researcher John Dani. "The average person makes multiple attempts before they quit."

Florida International University psychologists Elisa Trucco and Matthew Sutherland are in a race to find answers about the impact of e-cigarettes on the adolescent brain. [...] Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of nicotine because their brains are still rapidly developing, according to Trucco and Sutherland. Research is critical to help clinicians improve prevention programming and assist policymakers in deciding how to continue regulating these products, they said.

The Iftaa Department on Wednesday issued a fatwa stating that smoking electronic cigarettes and argileh (water pipe) was “prohibited by Sharia”, saying that it affects health and is a waste of money. In a country where around 61 per cent of Jordanian families have a member who smokes, as stated in a report by the Department of Statistics (DoS), the issued fatwa created a fuss on social media platforms. The department said the fatwa comes after electronic cigarettes have been widely promoted as alternatives for traditional tobacco [...]

Regular cigarettes are out. E-cigarettes are in.

That's one of the main findings in the 2018 Arizona Youth Survey, which asks, among other things, which illicit substances Arizona's eighth-, 10th- and 12th-graders gravitate toward. 30 days. The Arizona Youth Survey didn't ask students about e-cigarettes until 2016, but usage among high school seniors within 30 days of when they were asked jumped from 17.6 percent in 2016 to 26.1 percent in 2018.

E-cigarettes let people get a hit of nicotine without burning tobacco.

Avoiding burning tobacco is the single greatest preventative health measure human beings can take, given the diseases conventional cigarettes cause.

Unfortunately, our government and media now act as if vaping e-cigarettes is the health crisis.

“Your kids are not an experiment! Protect them from e-cigarettes,” warns former Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy in a CDC PSA.

Black and Hispanic Americans are less likely to smoke cigarettes than white Americans. Yet once they've started, they're more likely to stay hooked. National data show they successfully quit only about half as often as white smokers. Black and Hispanic Americans, especially those with low income and education levels, often work or live in places without smoke-free laws, said Stella Bialous, an associate professor of social behavioral sciences at the University of California, San Francisco. Being around others who smoke makes it more difficult to quit.

Consumer research has shown four key motivations that drive smokers’ interest in using vaping products. The first is financial, allowing smokers to enjoy an experience similar to smoking, while spending less money. Vapor products either have no, or very low excise tax, which makes them cheaper than traditional tobacco. At the same time, smokers are seeking an alternative that is thought to be less harmful than smoking. The third motivation to start vaping is the belief it may be possible to vape on more occasions and in more public places than smoking cigarettes.

In January last year, the New Nicotine Alliance (NNA) appealed against the 1992 EU-ban on the smokeless tobacco snus. According to Eurostat figures, smoking rates in Sweden [...] are the lowest in the whole of Europe [...] The ban was defended by counsels for the European Commission, the European Council, the European Parliament, Norway and the UK. Among the arguments presented were that tobacco consumption of all kinds needs to be reduced, and that snus could be regarded as a gateway to conventional cigarettes.

I’ve written several posts about e-cigarettes — i.e., vaping. I consider them the most effective response to the enormous public health problem posed by cigarette smoking — the leading cause of preventable death in this country. Vaping offers a relatively healthy alternative for smokers who want to be done with cigarettes (as a great many smokers desire, but haven’t been able to accomplish). They deliver the nicotine that attracts people to cigarettes (and addicts them), but not the tar and other carcinogens that kill them.
